Position: Alley Buyer (Livestock Procurement)
Location: Columbus Junction

Job Summary

The Alley Buyer is responsible for handling livestock in a hog yard environment. This role involves sorting, counting, weighing, tattooing, permanently identifying, and penning livestock according to segregation programs, as well as learning pork procurement programs, carcass merit evaluation, harvest sheet processes, and buying procedures. The Alley Buyer will also serve as a relief buyer during manager absences for training or vacation coverage.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sort, count, weigh, and permanently identify hogs.
  • Pen animals according to segregation programs.
  • Learn and apply pork procurement programs, carcass merit data, and harvest sheet processes.
  • Understand weight docks, buying procedures, and long-term contractual agreements.
  • Serve as a relief buyer when managers are absent for training or vacation.
  • Ensure compliance with all company SOPs for animal handling, safety protocols, and USDA regulations.
Job Requirements

Non-Negotiable Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Agriculture or livestock production background (December 2025 graduates considered, contingent on degree completion).
  • Livestock

    Experience:

    Strongly preferred (hands-on work with hogs or similar livestock).
  • Communication

    Skills:

    Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Travel Availability: Must be willing to travel overnight as needed.
Nice-to-Have Skills
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Prior supervisory experience (limited oversight may be required).
  • Familiarity with USDA regulations and animal welfare standards.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • Safety Gear

    Required:

    Hard hat, steel-toe boots, hearing protection.
  • Temperature Variations: Exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Standing/walking for entire shift.
    • Moderate force may be needed to handle livestock.
    • Minimal lifting (under 5 lbs for tools/tattoo equipment).
