Newspaper Editor – The Anamosa Journal-Eureka & The Linn News

The Anamosa Journal-Eureka and The Linn News are seeking an energetic, passionate, and community-focused Newspaper Editor to lead the editorial direction of two of eastern Iowa’s respected weekly newspapers.
This is an exciting opportunity to become the editorial leader for publications that serve the communities of Anamosa, Central City, Springville, Lisbon, Mount Vernon, Marion, and surrounding Linn County communities. You’ll help tell the stories that matter most—from city councils and school boards to local businesses, sports, features, and community events.
As Editor, you’ll oversee all editorial operations for both newspapers while working closely with a talented team of writers, photographers, designers, and freelance contributors. Responsibilities- Lead all editorial operations for both The Anamosa Journal-Eureka and The Linn News.
- Plan, assign, edit, and publish high-quality local news, feature stories, sports coverage, opinion content, and special sections.
- Ensure all content meets AP Style standards and maintains the highest levels of accuracy, fairness, and journalistic integrity.
- Mentor and manage staff writers, freelance contributors, photographers, and community correspondents.
- Cover local government meetings, schools, community organizations, businesses, and breaking news when needed.
- Develop engaging digital content for newspaper websites and social media platforms.
- Work closely with the design team to produce attractive, reader-friendly print editions each week.
- Coordinate photography and video storytelling opportunities.
- Help grow readership through creative storytelling, newsletters, social media, and digital initiatives.
- Build strong relationships with local leaders, schools, businesses, nonprofits, and community members.
- Maintain editorial calendars and ensure deadlines are consistently met.
- Assist with special publications, election coverage, annual guides, and community magazines.
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field is preferred, but equivalent experience is welcomed.
- Previous newspaper, journalism, or newsroom experience preferred.
- Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and AP Style skills.
- Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines across two publications.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and inspire reporters while maintaining high editorial standards.
- Experience with photography, social media, video production, or multimedia journalism is a plus.
- Familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar publishing software is beneficial but not required.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for covering community events and meetings.
