Special Education Classroom Teacher

Title: 7-8th Grade Special Education Teacher

Department: JH/HS Special Education

Receives Guidance From: Director of Teaching & Learning and Director of Student Programs

Basic Function: Responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring a high‑quality educational program that meets the individual learning and social‑emotional needs of all students.

Knowledge and Education – Required
  • Valid Iowa Teaching License with Special Education Endorsement Strat I and/or Strat II
  • Knowledge of Individualized Education Programs & Specially Designed Instruction
  • Previous experience in similar position
  • Previous teaching experience working with students with significant learning needs.
  • Good Communication and Problem Solving Skills

Instructional Responsibilities
  • Provides direct instruction to students in individual and small group settings.
  • Uses identified student needs to guide the learning process toward IEP achievement.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and provides resources.
  • Ensures that IEPs and BIPs are implemented and appropriate data is collected.
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies and materials consistent with core content standards.
  • Creates a research‑based classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to maturity.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates learning in accordance with district curriculum expectations.
Classroom Responsibilities
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, etc.
  • Conducts student assessments to identify needs and plan instruction.
  • Assesses accomplishments regularly and provides progress reports.
  • Works collaboratively with classroom associates assigned to students.
  • Collaborates with building and district personnel regarding student needs.
  • Develops a social contract with students.
  • Communicates expectations of classroom behavior and procedure.
  • Contacts parents frequently and conducts conferences.
  • Implements all district policies and expected practices.
  • Monitors and reports out for Alternate Assessment for qualified students.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Adheres to the Iowa Teaching Standards.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships and cooperates with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Meets deadlines, is punctual, and completes tasks with minimal assistance.
  • Participates in discussions focused on research‑based improvement.
  • Takes an active interest in the school and community; attends meetings and serves on committees.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal.

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year to be established in accordance with provisions of the Comprehensive Agreement.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Comprehensive Agreement.

Physical Requirements: Bending, carrying, climbing, travel between job sites, lifting, pushing‑pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, and walking.

Working Conditions: Includes extremes of temperature and humidity. Hazards include stairs and communicable diseases.
