High School Assistant Principal

SUMMARY:

The High School Assistant Principal serves as an instructional leader and key member of the building administrative team, supporting the academic, behavioral, and social‑emotional success of all students in grades 9-12. This position assists in leading a safe, inclusive, and high‑quality learning environment aligned to the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the Dallas Center‑Grimes Community School District.

The Assistant Principal supports teaching and learning through effective supervision, data‑informed decision‑making, student services coordination, and the consistent implementation of district policies, procedures, and positive behavior supports. The role requires strong collaboration with students, families, staff, and community partners to promote continuous improvement and student achievement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Instructional Leadership & School Improvement
  • Support the implementation of high‑quality instructional practices aligned to district curriculum, standards, and assessment systems.
  • Conduct observations, evaluations, and instructional coaching for assigned certified and support staff in accordance with district and state requirements.
  • Collaborate with the administrative team and teacher leaders to support professional learning communities (PLCs), MTSS implementation, and continuous school improvement efforts.
  • Use student performance, attendance, and behavior data to guide instructional and programmatic decisions.
  • Assist with curriculum leadership and oversight of assigned content or program areas.
  • Work proactively with students, families, and staff to improve student attendance, engagement, and achievement.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to determine, implement, and monitor academic, behavioral, and social‑emotional interventions.
  • Facilitate or support the Student Services Team and participate on other committees as assigned.
  • Assist in maintaining consistent, fair, and developmentally appropriate student discipline practices.
  • Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and discipline records.
Operations, Compliance & Collaboration
  • Assist with state and federal reporting requirements, including Department of Education submissions and compliance documentation.
  • Collaborate with juvenile court liaison personnel, community agencies, and service providers to support students and families.
  • Support building operations, supervision schedules, and assigned administrative duties.
  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate integrity in all professional responsibilities.
  • Contribute to a positive, respectful, and collaborative school culture.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain current knowledge of educational leadership practices, secondary education research, and legal requirements.
  • Participate in professional development, professional organizations, and ongoing learning opportunities.
  • Promote and follow Board of Education policies, district procedures, and professional standards of conduct.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
CERTIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in Educational Administration or related field required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience preferred, with at least three (3) years at the secondary (7-12) level.
  • Prior successful administrative experience preferred.
  • Valid Iowa Administrator License required with:
    • Evaluator Approval
    • 5-12 Principal Endorsement (#170) or PK-12 Principal Endorsement (#189)
  • Knowledge of secondary learner development, professional learning communities, and multi‑tiered systems of support required.

  • Strong instructional leadership and supervision skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and use student data to support decision‑making and continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, assessment, and instructional practices across content areas.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations in an objective and respectful manner.
  • Strong organizational, problem‑solving, and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
