Job Description
TITLE: Special Education Classroom Associate
REPORTS TO: Principal
RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Classroom Teacher & AEA Support Staff
BASIC FUNCTION:
To assist in creating a supportive, safe, and engaging classroom environment by providing instructional and behavioral support to students under the direction of the classroom teacher. The Special Education Classroom Associate helps with instructional activities, classroom organization, and supervision of students to ensure an optimal learning experience.
Essential Performance Responsibilities- Assist the classroom teacher in implementing daily lessons and classroom routines.
- Work with individuals or small groups of students to reinforce learning initially introduced by the teacher.
- Support differentiated instruction to meet the varied academic and behavioral needs of students.
- Prepare, organize, and distribute instructional materials and classroom supplies. Perform non-instructional tasks such as clerical duties and material preparation.
- Support the classroom teacher with instruction delivery as directed.
- Supervise students during recess, transitions, meals, and other non-classroom settings.
- Provide supervision and assistance during field trips and other off-site activities.
- Participate in in-service training and staff development as directed by administration.
- Foster a respectful, inclusive, and positive classroom culture.
- Monitor and support the physical, emotional, social, and academic growth of students.
- Promote and reinforce positive student behaviors and classroom expectations.
- Assist with student progress monitoring, assessments, and data collection as directed.
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe classroom environment.
- Follow all health, safety, and sanitation protocols, including handwashing and cleaning procedures.
- Promptly report any student injuries, incidents, or concerns to the appropriate staff.
- Maintain clear, respectful communication with the classroom teacher and building principal. Demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or building administrator.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and school information.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Ability to develop positive working relationships with students and staff.
- Demonstrated reliability and consistent attendance.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience working with school-aged children preferred.
- Understanding of child development and instructional support strategies.
- Strong interpersonal and problem‑solving skills.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, which may include but are not limited to: standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, lifting up to 20 pounds, and supervising students in various settings, both indoors and outdoors.
- 9-month work year.
- Compensation and work schedule determined by the Board of Education.
- Employment governed by Board policy and applicable laws.
Performance will be reviewed annually by the Building Principal or designee, in accordance with Board policy.
