The High School English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher provides standards-based English language development instruction for multilingual learners in grades 9-12. The teacher supports students in acquiring English proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening while promoting academic language development necessary for success across all content areas.
The ELL Teacher collaborates with classroom teachers, counselors, and support staff to ensure equitable access to grade-level curriculum. This position plays a critical role in supporting culturally and linguistically diverse students, monitoring language growth, and implementing instructional strategies aligned with state and federal requirements for English learners.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Plan and deliver high-quality English language development (ELD) instruction aligned with district curriculum, Iowa Core standards, and WIDA English Language Development Standards.
- Provide direct instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills to support English language acquisition and academic achievement.
- Administer language proficiency assessments and use screening, placement, and progress-monitoring data to guide instruction.
- Develop and implement individualized language support plans based on proficiency levels and student needs.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to support sheltered instruction, co‑teaching models, and classroom accommodations.
- Assist in monitoring student progress toward English proficiency and academic goals.
- Maintain accurate records related to identification, services, progress monitoring, and compliance documentation.
- Communicate regularly with students, families, teachers, and counselors regarding language development and academic progress.
- Support newcomer students in orientation to school systems, expectations, and academic requirements as needed.
- Provide instructional accommodations and modifications as required by IEPs, 504 plans, and English learner service plans.
- Integrate culturally responsive practices and materials that affirm students' linguistic and cultural identities.
- Integrate technology and digital tools to enhance instruction and language development.
- Participate in required meetings, professional development, district trainings, and English learner compliance activities.
- Promote and adhere to district policies, procedures, and professional standards of conduct.
- Bachelor's degree in Education, English, TESOL, Linguistics, or a related field required.
- Experience teaching or working with high school students preferred.
- Experience working with multilingual learners or culturally diverse populations preferred.
- Criminal background check required.
- Valid State of Iowa teaching license required.
- Iowa English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement (K‑12) required.
- Knowledge of second language acquisition theory and instructional best practices for multilingual learners.
- Understanding of WIDA standards, ACCESS testing, and language proficiency assessment practices.
- Ability to design differentiated, standards-based instruction that supports diverse language proficiency levels.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in co‑teaching and consultative models.
- Ability to use instructional technology, language development platforms, learning management systems, and district software applications.
- Effective interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to support a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment.
- Ability to maintain student safety, follow safety procedures, and report concerns to administrators.
- Ability to stay current with district standards, state and federal EL compliance requirements, data privacy requirements, and cybersecurity practices related to student information.
