Job Description

SUMMARY: The Assistant Principal will be located in Dallas Center and support both Dallas Center Elementary and DCG Middle School. This position will serve as an instructional leader and key member of the building administrative team, supporting the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success of all students in grades K-6. This position assists in leading a safe, inclusive, and developmentally responsive learning environment aligned to the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District.

The Assistant Principal supports teaching and learning through effective supervision, data-informed decision-making, student services coordination, and the consistent implementation of district policies, procedures, and positive behavior supports. The role requires strong collaboration with students, families, staff, and community partners to promote continuous improvement and student achievement while fostering a positive elementary school culture.

Instructional Leadership & School Improvement
  • Support the implementation of high-quality instructional practices aligned to district curriculum, Iowa Core standards, and assessment systems.
  • Conduct observations, evaluations, and instructional coaching for assigned certified and support staff in accordance with district and state requirements.
  • Collaborate with the administrative team and teacher leaders to support Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and continuous school improvement efforts.
  • Use student performance, attendance, and behavior data to guide instructional and programmatic decisions.
  • Support literacy, numeracy, and foundational skill development initiatives.
  • Assist with curriculum leadership and oversight of assigned content or program areas.
Student Services, Attendance & Behavior
  • Promote developmentally appropriate practices that support the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth of elementary students.
  • Work proactively with students, families, and staff to improve student attendance, engagement, and achievement.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to determine, implement, and monitor academic, behavioral, and social-emotional interventions.
  • Facilitate or support the Student Services Team, MTSS teams, and other building committees as assigned.
  • Assist in maintaining consistent, fair, and developmentally appropriate student discipline practices aligned with district PBIS frameworks.
  • Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and behavior records.
Family & Community Engagement
  • Foster strong partnerships with families through proactive communication and relationship-building.
  • Support family engagement initiatives, school events, and community outreach efforts.
  • Collaborate with community agencies and service providers to support students and families.
Operations, Compliance & Collaboration
  • Assist with state and federal reporting requirements, including Department of Education submissions and compliance documentation.
  • Support building operations, supervision schedules, safety procedures, and assigned administrative duties.
  • Assist in emergency preparedness planning and implementation.
  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate integrity in all professional responsibilities.
  • Contribute to a positive, respectful, and collaborative school culture.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain current knowledge of educational leadership practices, elementary education research, and legal requirements.
  • Participate in professional development, professional organizations, and ongoing learning opportunities.
  • Promote and follow Board of Education policies, district procedures, and professional standards of conduct.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
Education & Related Work Experience
  • Master's degree in Educational Administration or related field required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience preferred, with elementary (K-6) experience strongly preferred.
  • Prior successful administrative or instructional leadership experience preferred.
  • Valid Iowa Administrator License required with:
    • Evaluator Approval
    • PK-12 Principal Endorsement (#189)
  • Knowledge of elementary learner development, foundational literacy and numeracy instruction, professional learning communities, and multi-tiered systems of support required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong instructional leadership and supervision skills.
  • Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate elementary practices.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and use student data to support decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, assessment, and instructional practices across elementary content areas.
