Evaluation Period
  • Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per WCS Performance and Assessment Procedures.
  • Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1.
Purpose of the Position

Wa-Nee Community Schools and the North Wood Athletic Department, an IHSAA 4A high school and member of the Northern Lakes Conference, is seeking a Director of Athletic Performance to establish and maintain an advanced athletic performance program for all students and sports, with the three major goals of improving athletic performance, reducing athletic injuries, and teaching lifelong fitness and movement skills.

This position will devise training plans in collaboration with our Health and Physical Education Department and Head Coaches based on scientific principles. They will also supervise and lead training sessions, evaluate students, maintain records, teach strength and conditioning classes, cultivate a positive training environment that encourages team building, accountability, discipline, and work ethic. This position serves the Physical Education Department and the Athletic Department.

Minimum Requirements

The following are the qualifications and minimum requirements necessary for a person to perform this job.

  • BS in Exercise Science, Kinesiology or related field.
  • A current relevant professional certification credentialed by an independent accreditation agency—for example, the NSCA (CSCS), ISSA (SSC), NCSF (CSC), or CSCCa (SCCC).
  • Current Membership within the National High School Strength and Conditioning Association (NHSSCA)
  • Current standard first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillation (AED) certifications.
  • A strong working knowledge and teaching skills in analysis and techniques of strength training.
  • Experience and/or expertise in strength and conditioning programming for high school populations.
  • Evidence of ability to interact positively with student athletes, colleagues, and the public.
  • Evidence of strong organizational skills and effective oral and written communication skills.
Essential Functions of the Position
  • Design and instruct strength and performance classes (APC).
  • Design and implement strength training and performance programs in-season, off-season, and pre-season for all school-sanctioned male and female athletic programs in a manner that reflects research-driven practices.
  • Work in cooperation with the athletic training staff in the rehabilitation and strengthening of injured athletes.
  • Facilitate a collaborative relationship among Health and Physical Education Department and Sport Coaches.
  • Design and implement policies and procedures for the strength and conditioning program in accordance with Strength and Conditioning Professional Standards and Guidelines.
  • Develop systems for tracking student attendance and progress in conjunction with the sport coaches.
  • Conduct an annual needs-analysis for each sport team in conjunction with the sport coach and the team's athletic trainer at the conclusion of each sport season.
  • Annually conduct and review a departmental risk management plan.
  • Complete an annual budgetary proposal for the program that includes routine maintenance, purchase of new equipment, and staffing needs.
  • Determine and reinforce expectations for student conduct that mirror the school's expectations for curricular and extra-curricular activities, as stated in the school's Student Code of Conduct.
Secondary Functions of the Position
  • Assist with Activities Center scheduling, and community hours
  • Coordinate a co-curricular novice level program exposure for grades 5 – 8 that serves as a strength and performance introduction reflecting research-driven practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used
  • Must know how to operate strength training equipment, automated external defibrillator (AED), and sports aid equipment.
