K-12 School CounselorJob Goal: To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational and occupational life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.
Essential Functions- Define and interpret the functions of the Guidance Counselor to the public, students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
- Plan and administer the K-12 School guidance program under the supervision of the K-12 school principal.
- Assist all students in construction of their individual educational course plan leading toward graduation and required courses or skills needed in their chosen field (including individual schedules).
- Assist the K-12 School Principal in all scheduling activities including the preparation of the master schedule and provide leadership of appropriate classroom placement of students.
- Plan, develop, and supervise the district pupil‑testing program in conjunction with curriculum coordinator.
- Organize, monitor and supervise the student records system (including grading cards).
- Act as liaison with the various offices and agencies within the area that provide specialized professional help for the district’s students and their parents.
- Act as confidant in counseling students on personal, social, educational and vocational concerns.
- Identify students with special problems, talents and needs.
- Assist parents, teachers and administrators in relating positively to students by improving human relation skills.
- Conduct a continuing study of the district’s graduates and dropouts.
- Serve as District Referral Manager in the identification, placement and service of special education students.
- Teach middle school guidance class.
- Participate in ICT, Instructional Consultation Team meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Complete movement of hands, feet, and all fingers. Twisting of all body parts, especially wrists, fingers, hands, feet and body. Excellent eye‑hand coordination and body mobility are necessary. Dexterity in both hands (hands doing different tasks at the same time) is extremely important. Visual perception required.
Other RequirementsIntellectual, sensory acuity, leadership, communications and organizational ability, maintains good working relationship with co‑workers, effective oral and written communication, visual and auditory acuity for dealing with students and staff. A strong command of the English language in the area of human relations is required.
Working ConditionsClimatic environment such as extremes of temperature, humidity (especially in non‑air‑conditioned building) and occasional outside work during inclement weather are possible. Hazards such as cleaning solvents, dust, moving some light equipment and possible furniture, drafts. There are stairs in the elementary building. The exposure to communicable diseases is possible.
