TEACHING & LEARNING SPECIALIST (215 DAYS) SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Directors of Curriculum and Instruction, the Teaching and Learning Specialist works collaboratively with a high-performing team and serves as a WCSD expert in a specific grade level or content area supporting the Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS), instructional strategies and pedagogy. The Specialist supports, models, and provides professional learning in researched based strategies to ensure high quality instruction for students.

The Specialist provides leadership in the development, articulation, and implementation of curricular tools to support student learning. The Specialist coordinates initiatives that assist in shifting teacher practice to better understand critical pedagogy, the expectations of the NVACS, and the need for change based on student evidence through facilitation, observations, co-learning and reflective conversations. The Specialist serves as an advocate for the grade level or content area within the development and deployment of courses and initiatives.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborates with C&I Specialists, Departments and school personnel as a grade level or content matter expert in the interpretation and implementation of the NVACS to include essential standards/outcomes;
  • Coordinates the development / review of curricular tools to support instruction;
  • Develops a strong and current knowledge base in curriculum, effective instructional strategies, professional learning communities, teacher learning teams, assessment techniques (including the analysis of student test data), standards and content. Provides information to teachers, principals, and district leaders as needed in these areas;
  • Facilitates a variety of professional learning opportunities designed to increase the knowledge of the NVACS to include essential standards/outcomes and research based instructional practices;
  • Supports and mentors teachers in their learning and application of new knowledge and instructional practices in relation to NVACS and the content area(s);
  • Supports adopted instructional materials & approved supplemental materials for the grade level(s) and content area(s);
  • Supports teachers in the integration of materials to best meet the needs of the students;
  • Supports collaborative and technology-based support systems designed to support the curricular needs of teachers;
  • Monitors Charter Schools as part of the team representing C&I;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/

Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Education:

A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in education, either elementary or secondary depending on the position and in the related subject area.

2.

Experience:

Five (5) years of successful classroom teaching or coaching/facilitation experience. Candidates must demonstrate evidence of leadership and involvement in the district initiatives, the grade level or the content area.

3.
Qualification into the Teacher Leadership Pool is required. If the qualified candidate selected is not currently in the Teacher Leadership Pool, they must meet annual requirements for professional learning and qualify for the WCSD Teacher Leadership Pool within three years.

4. Licenses/Certificates:
Possession of a valid Nevada teaching certificate.
