Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing I HQ (33 hrs/wk, 180 days) Summary Description
Under general supervision of the school principal, the Educational Interpreter 1 facilitates communication for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing (D/HH) students in the educational environment; signs all spoken communication including formal instruction, classroom discussions, and incidental conversations; voices for D/HH students when required; interprets audio learning devices and other sound forms of communication in the learning environment; translates audio stimuli into sign language understandable to the deaf.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Facilitate communication transfer between the D/HH student and teachers, peers, school staff, and other support personnel.
- Provide communication transfer of classroom assignments, procedures and teachers’ explanations.
- Provide academic instruction for classroom assignments.
- Provide communication transfer through reverse‑voicing of D/HH student’s questions and responses.
- Assist teaching staff in a variety of classroom and school‑related activities, including supervision of D/HH students during test taking and accompanying students to interpreting services at the office, nurse, counselor, support staff, and athletic coaches.
- Monitor and assist with FM systems and hearing aids.
- Maintain safety and discipline by supervising and/or assisting in the supervision of students on playgrounds, in lunchrooms, school halls, library, and during busing.
- Act as liaison between general education teachers, resource teachers, and Teachers of the Hearing Impaired.
- Preview instructional information for needed sign vocabulary or sign invention when possible.
- Attend seminars and conferences, view challenging instructional sign language materials to maintain and increase signing and reverse‑voicing abilities.
- Comply with NRS 656A.110 ethical standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/
Experience:
Any combination of education/experience that could provide the required knowledge and skills. Typical pathways include:
- Associate’s degree in any field.
Professional credentials required:
- EIPA 3.5+ and a passing score on the EIPA Written Knowledge Test.
All incumbents must comply with NRS 656A.110, NAC 656A and state regulations.
Scope of Practice- Provisional Interpreters may work in K‑12 educational settings if they possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience for each assignment.
- Provide proof of participation in at least 20 hours of professional development and at least 20 hours of mentoring.
- Register with the Department of Health and Public Services Aging and Disability Services Division Interpreter/Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) Registry as a provisional educational interpreter.
- Maintain registration for the duration of the assignment.
Job Requirements
Wear appropriate solid clothing to maximize clarity of signs and avoid eye strain for D/HH students.
Preferred QualificationsPost‑high‑school training in sign language is desirable.
Competencies for Successful Performance- Knowledge of various visual communication systems (Signed English, SEE, MSE, PSE, ASL, CUE).
- Knowledge of hearing disorders and their effects on learning and behavior.
- Skills taught in the basic subjects of elementary and secondary school curriculum.
- Skill in computer record‑keeping techniques.
- Ability to communicate expressively and receptively through a sign language system.
- Ability to understand general school subjects to facilitate interpretation.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships in the workplace.
- Ability to input and maintain accurate records on a computer or manually.
