Position: Special Education Para II (6.5 hrs /172 days)
Location: Nevada

Title

Para-educator II – Special Education

Summary of Position

Under the guidance of site administration and a certificated teacher(s), you will work with individual or small groups of students in the general education classroom, self‑contained classroom, or community settings. Your role includes modeling necessary skills for assignments, following educational and behavioral plans, modeling appropriate behaviors, and assisting students with special health care needs. Employees may be assigned to classroom support, lunchroom, playground, and other areas.

Responsibilities

and Essential Functions
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support classroom objectives.
  • Communicate with teachers and district personnel to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Implement instructional programs and lesson plans under supervision, covering reading, math, language comprehension, writing, and computer skills.
  • Maintain classroom equipment and work area to ensure a safe learning environment and meet mandated requirements.
  • Monitor students individually or in groups in various settings (rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus zones, cafeteria, assemblies, field trips) to maintain safety and positivity.
  • Promote good student habits and independence to improve student outcomes.
  • Review and revise instruction under the assigned teacher for behavioral and developmental goals.
  • Document daily activities (behavior, assignments, task time) for daily logs and hourly activities.
  • Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team, including approved physical restraint techniques, for students with behavior disorders.
  • Model conversation, manners, cleanup, listening, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior.
  • Monitor students’ daily schedules and behavior plans for safety and positivity.
  • Communicate with supervising staff and direct parents to the teacher for IEP progress updates.
  • Respond to emergency situations (injury, conflict) to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Administer basic first aid, medical assistance, and escort students to health care professionals as instructed by a health care professional.
  • Assist medically fragile students with mobility, toileting, diapering, bathing, grooming, and personal hygiene.
  • Attend meetings and in‑service training (first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, CPI) to acquire job‑related knowledge.
Non-essential Functions
  • Assist in finding supports that promote student independence.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Contacts

Frequent contact with certificated personnel, students, and other district personnel; limited contact with parents.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Basic math including fractions, percentages, and ratios.
  • Grammar, punctuation, reading fluency, and comprehension.
  • Health and safety standards.
  • Oral and written communication using correct English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and math.
Acceptable Experience and Training
  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • CPR and CPI certification.
  • “Highly Qualified” credentials:
    Associate’s degree, 48 college/university credits, or a passing score on the Para‑Professional Assessment ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).).
  • Experience providing academic and physical assistance to special students (preferred).
  • A Licensed CNA meets the experience and training requirements.
Licenses / Certificates

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Nevada Driver’s License. Experience working with special needs children is highly desirable; some positions may require sign language proficiency.

Physical and Mental/Intellectual Requirements
  • Strength, dexterity, and coordination to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to handle 10‑25 pounds frequently, up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Capacity to stand, walk, push, pull, carry, balance, stoop, kneel, and perform repetitive fine‑motor activities.
  • Mobility to work in typical classroom settings and use standard classroom equipment.
  • Professional communication with internal and external members of the school community.
