- Candidates must have knowledge and understanding of child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning
Special education teachers must be able to provide specialized instruction across settings including consultant teacher, resource room, integrated co‑teaching and special class. They must support students with a variety of educational disabilities in any school setting and work collaboratively with teachers, service providers, support staff, administrators, students and their families to design instruction and provide accommodations for all students to access the standards and meet their goals.
Responsibilities- Provides research‑based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's Individualized Educational Program (IEP) in a variety of settings.
- Develops and coordinates the delivery of annual IEP plans for students to include present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
- Collaborates and consults with students, families, educational professionals and community service providers regarding the needs of students.
- Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptations, instructional accommodations, adaptive equipment, behavior intervention plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
- Coordinates implementation and monitoring of supplementary aides, services and accommodations for all students on their caseload.
- Communicates with parents to discuss their children's progress and to determine priorities for their children and their individualized educational needs.
- Assesses student progress, collects data and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques/plans.
- Teaches social skills and coping strategies as determined by the students' individualized education plan by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system.
- Participates in development of behavior support or intervention plans. Facilitates implementation and data monitoring of the plan and provides consistent explicit instruction in the identified target areas for students on their caseload.
- Maintains accurate and complete student records and prepares reports as required.
- Establishes clear learning targets for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates those learning targets to students.
- Develops plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow‑up of students in inclusive classroom settings.
- Serves as a member of multidisciplinary teams as appropriate.
- Provides personal care for students as needed.
- Maintains professional competence by participating in professional learning, faculty, curriculum and department meetings, and other professional opportunities.
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the building or district administration.
Salary:
As per current Webster Teacher Association (WTA) Contract based on experience and education.
