Job DescriptionThe Algona Community School District is seeking a highly qualified candidate for our School Nurse position. The Algona Community School District serves over 1400 students from Kossuth, Palo Alto, Humboldt and Hancock counties and is a regional hub offering a comprehensive PK-12 educational curriculum, including areas of special education, talented and gifted, title reading and alternative education.

Job Goals:
To promote health and safety among students and staff and to provide health services assistance to the school community.
Qualifications:
- Physical Examination as required by the district
- Current Registered Nurse License in Iowa
- Ability to communicate and get along with staff, students, parents, and community.
- Knowledge of State requirements for immunization, child abuse, and school health.
- Health certificate on file
- Child abuse certificate on file
- Certification, experience, other qualifications as determined by the principal and superintendent.
Reports to:
Superintendent of Schools
- Assists in developing and maintaining a school health program with the major responsibility in the area of school health services.
- Maintain a current emergency care card on each student and staff member.
- Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students and be responsible for verification of immunizations that are mandated.
- Prepares and submits reports to the principal, superintendent, public health nurse, state department, and other support agencies as necessary and as required by law.
- Works closely with the principals and assistant principals regarding student attendance problems.
- Authorizes readmission or exclusion of students who have been absent from school due to serious illness.
- Communicate closely with instructors regarding health issues and act as a classroom resource in the health area.
- Assists in evaluation of accident and injury reports to identify and recommend solutions to casual activities and factors.
- Assumes responsibility in the absence of a physician for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
- Assist the Superintendent to review, recommend, and develop Board policy in the health service area.
- Acts as a resource person on health and medical matters to students and staff.
- Conducts or oversees screening programs for vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc. as required by the State and District.
- Monitors communicable disease control program, notifies the Superintendent of the incidence of reportable communicable diseases and sends required reports to the Department of Health.
- Files an annual report with the Superintendent on the health service activities conducted during the school year.
- Contacts parents and refers students identified through screening procedures to be at risk for health problems to the medical care resources in the community.
- Refers all complaints, suspicions and concerns of child abuse to the proper authorities as a mandatory reporter.
- Responsible for implementing and overseeing the occupational exposure control plan for blood borne pathogens for district employees.
- All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principals and superintendent.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary to be determined by the the master contract and work year to be determined by the Superintendent and the Board of Education. Work year will be based upon when students are in school.
EVALUATIONS:
Performance of this position will be evaluated by the Superintendent.
