SUMMARY DESCRIPTIONUnder the direction of the principal in collaboration with school counseling and the Career Technical Education program, plans, coordinates, communicates, and administers the activities of the Career Center. Incumbent performs related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSPositions in this class typically work in a high school, under the supervision of the counseling staff.
EXEMPLARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIESSchedules, coordinates, and oversees career-related projects; organizes and implements with counseling and faculty input, school and community programs related to career development; works within a given budget to order, organize and maintain career center materials; selects, maintains, and teaches computerized career delivery systems; serves as a liaison to post‑secondary educational institutions, military, business, and community agencies; serves as a link between Washoe county schools and the business community;
maintains career folders; publicizes and organizes career, scholarship and financial aid information and opportunities for students and staff; works with counseling and teaching staff to develop and deliver sequential career development activities and programs; coordinates career assessments; maintain active employment file; organizes and executes career related field trips and work‑based learning experiences; collects and reports data on career related activities from individual school sites;
works with librarian and counseling staff to identify appropriate career guidance resources for the library collection.
Education/
Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills.
- Education:
High school diploma or equivalent; some college experience is desirable;
Career Development Facilitator Certification is desirable; - Experience:
Six months related work experience that would demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Knowledge of: Computers and computerized career delivery systems; career programs; student scholarships and financial aid; secondary school procedures and curriculum; word processing;
PowerPoint (for presentations); budget and recordkeeping.
Skills at: Problem solving; communicating effectively in verbal and written form with students and adults; managing multiple tasks; analyzing situations accurately and proposing appropriate actions; organizing information in an orderly fashion; group presentations; working independently; maintaining accurate records; establishing positive and effective working relationships with teachers, students, staff business, representatives, parents, post‑secondary and community representatives.
License/Certificates: A Career Development Facilitator Certificate is desirable.
Special Consideration: Must be willing and able to work a variable job schedule.
WORK ENVIRONMENTThe environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
