PARA EDUCATOR ASSISTANT I
Position:
Para educator Assistant I – 17 hours per week, one-year only, grant funded. End date:
June 2026.
Applicants must be highly qualified, meeting one of the following:
- High school diploma or equivalent plus at least 48 semester hours of college credit.
- Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- Para Pro Assessment score of 460 or higher.
Assists teaching staff in individual and group instruction, maintains records and instructional materials, and performs related tasks as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThe Para educator Assistant I & II class differs from the Para educator Aide class in that it is regularly required to provide significant academic instructional assistance.
EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES- Assists teaching staff across classrooms and related areas.
- Supports preparation of lesson outlines, plans, and teaching aids.
- Presents subject matter using varied teaching methods.
- Assists students individually or in groups with lesson assignments.
- Reinforces learning concepts.
- Prepares, administers, and grades exams and homework.
- Observes student progress, reporting issues to teachers and parents.
- Prepares classrooms and operates audio-visual equipment.
- Orders supplies and maintains classroom bulletin boards.
- Distributes and collects teaching materials.
- Assists with student discipline on playgrounds, lunchrooms, school halls, library, and study halls.
- Operates standard office equipment.
Education and experience requirements may be satisfied in various ways:
- Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college or university, preferably in child development, education, or a related field.
- High school diploma or equivalent plus one year of relevant experience in instructional or guidance activities with students.
- Two years of experience as a Para educator aide or in similar duties.
The same highly qualified requirements apply: high school diploma or equivalent with 48 semester hours, associate’s degree, or Para Pro score of 460 or more.
WORK ENVIRONMENTClassroom setting with frequent interaction with students, teachers, and other staff. Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, occasional lifting of materials, and operating audio-visual equipment. The role requires consistent discipline management in playgrounds, lunchrooms, and hallways.

- Securing and maintaining student confidence and cooperation.
- Dealing tactfully with parents and school personnel.
- Evaluating situations accurately and taking effective action.
- Typing with speed and accuracy.
- Spelling correctly.
- Reading, writing, and speaking English at a required level.
- Maintaining accurate records, files, and summaries.
- Developing instructional materials.
- Making mathematical computations.
- Operating office equipment and audio‑visual equipment.
- Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
One-year-only position ending June 2026. The position is grant-funded and contingent upon continued funding. The hiring administrator may retain the incumbent for the duration of the grant without re‑advertising.
