summary description

under the general supervision of an administrator, a special education teacher will be assigned a caseload and will implement school board policy regarding the educational curriculum of a particular instructional division and/or instructional unit.

essential duties and responsibilities

  • planning and preparation: administer district curriculum aligned with common core state standards and consistent with iep instructions as needed.
  • design and implement effective lessons and student assessments aligned with common core state standards.
  • design differentiated instruction and assessments aligned with common core state standards at the appropriate instructional level.
  • provide modifications and adaptations and implement ieps in an organized, systematic manner.
  • analyze student progress and ensure assessment regulations and guidelines are followed.
  • demonstrate mastery of content and pedagogy, knowledge of students and resources, developmental patterns, and characteristics of students with disabilities.
  • set instructional outcomes for diverse learners; create a respectful, positive learning climate; maintain a safe, accessible, and outcome-focused environment.
  • manage classroom procedures and student behavior; demonstrate cultural competency.
  • instruction: communicate learning expectations; engage students; use discussion and questioning techniques; embed assessment in instruction; demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness; apply multi-tiered systems of support; apply strategies and accommodations for students with disabilities to access curriculum; coordinate with other service staff to provide student instruction.
  • professional responsibilities: maintain accurate records and ieps per state and federal guidelines within timelines; demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct; work with administrators, staff, and community per wcsd procedures; promote meaningful parent participation in the iep process; reflect on teaching; participate in a professional community; perform other duties as assigned; work as part of an education/assessment team for objectives for assigned students.

special education teachers may be assigned as resource special education teachers or to specialized programs within the special education umbrella to provide supports. Descriptions for programs (ec, ec sip, ec strat, ma, ik, cls, sip, cls/sip, strategies, social resource, visually impaired, orientation and mobility specialist, home hospital, adaptive physical education) are described to align with program needs and objectives.   • education/experience: any combination of education and experience; typically a bachelor's degree with student teaching and ability to obtain a nevada teaching license.
