Position OverviewThe 1:1 Aide is specifically responsible for assisting in the supervision and care of a student with special medical needs in the general education setting. The 1:1 aide will assist with supporting the student during the regular school day under the direct supervision of classroom teachers, the School Nurse, and Director of Operations.
Duties/Responsibilities- Implement all aspects of the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and provide the necessary support and monitoring to help the student manage their identified needs while remaining in the classroom to access learning.
- Act as a mandated reporter to ensure the safety of the students.
- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives and meet IEP goals.
- Administer tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting student needs in the classroom.
- Assists students to attend to the student’s personal hygiene and care needs.
- Attend meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Communicate with supervising instructional staff, a variety of health care professionals, and professional support personnel for the purpose of communicating progress or implementing IEP objectives.
- Escort student (e.g., bathroom, classroom, community etc.) for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and safe arrival to and/or from a destination.
- Monitor student’s daily schedule for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Provide, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instruction to the student in a variety of individual and group activities for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans; and ensuring the student’s access to his/her least restrictive environment.
- Supervise individuals and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., community field trips, hallways, bus loading areas, cafeteria, parking lots, classrooms, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
- Prepare the learning environment to allow the student to participate in classroom activities.
- Supervise and escort the student during any and all emergency drills or during actual emergencies for the purpose of providing a safe learning environment.
- Attend any problem solving/IEP meeting and provide input as to the student’s progress for the purpose of maintaining a whole student approach to his/her education.
- Participate in training for the purpose of providing or receiving information and updating skills.
- Collect data on the student’s IEP goals for the purpose of maintaining accurate records and engaging in data based decision making.
- Establish, cultivate, and maintain a collaborative relationship with the classroom teachers, the School Nurse and Director of Operations.
- Partner with the SPED Team to review material taught in class with individual students who require additional support.
- Lead on monitoring student medical needs and reporting updates to School Nurse.
- Assist Nurse with providing snack or break for students, along with problem-solving and making timely solution-focused determinations to meet the needs of the student.
- Responsible for managing and reducing risk within the classroom with the support of the classroom teachers, the school nurse and Director of Operations and seeking assistance when needed to resolve the matter.
- Perform other duties outlined by classroom teachers, the School Nurse, and the Director of Operations.
- Comply with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including those of the NYS Department of Education, Department of Health, and NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
