SUMMARY OF POSITION

Under the guidance of the school principal, the Dean TOSA assists the building principal in organizing and fostering a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff, and parents.

This position includes responsibilities such as leading, directing, counseling a variety of personnel and programs; creating effective parent, teacher, and child communications; supporting, encouraging, mentoring; and promoting teamwork among teachers, staff, and parents. The Dean TOSA acts as the principal during the principal's absence.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists the principal in all duties and acts as principal during absences.
  • Serves as instructional leader to promote student behavior supportive of the school's instructional programs.
  • Assists in selection, training, and implementation of district standards and initiatives.
  • Assists with scheduling, selection of instructional materials, data analysis to improve instruction, and program design for Title 1 and ESL students.
  • Supports teachers with students who have behavior problems.
  • Maintains accurate student attendance records and promotes good attendance.
  • Assists with student orientation, counseling, discipline, due process, data gathering, student recognition, and securing student services with outside agencies.
  • Assumes responsibility for implementing discipline procedures and developing strategies for at‑risk students.
  • Collaborates with parents, teachers, and the community to promote effective communications and positive relations.
  • Conducts parent and student meetings and attends all after‑school activities.
  • Represents the principal at school activities when absent.
  • Supervises all school activities such as field trips, assemblies, plays, and special events.
  • Promotes positive school climate and staff morale through recognition programs.
  • Promotes school safety by implementing drills.
  • Conducts search and seizure work with law enforcement and enforces district discipline policies.
  • Implements co‑curricular activities, athletics, and clubs.
  • Assists with evaluation of classified staff.
  • Assists with development of the master schedule.
  • Assists with hiring, orientation, evaluation of licensed and classified staff; plans staff development and meetings; manages communications.
  • Serves on district‑level committees and attends conferences, workshops, and meetings.
NON‑ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE
  • Modern principles and practices of public school administration; state and federal laws; IDEA, Section 504; shared decision making; school philosophies; teacher performance evaluation; competency‑based programs.
SKILLS
  • Human relations, conflict resolution, communication, leadership, organizational theory, multicultural awareness; proficiency in microcomputer and related software.
ABILITIES
  • Coordinate the school's educational program with the district strategic plan.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, administrators, board members, outside agencies, staff, parents, and the public.
  • Develop and coordinate staff development plans.
  • Strengthen staff morale.
  • Analyze and evaluate information accurately and express ideas clearly in oral and written reports.
  • Provide a leadership position and support.
  • Organize professional development for special services staff.
  • Demonstrate confidence, initiative, self‑direction, and motivation.
  • Conduct research, analyze findings, produce comprehensive reports and plans.
  • Work independently, handle multiple priorities, meet deadlines.
  • Handle stress and interact with others.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work is performed under direct administrative direction of the site principal and reviewed through conferences and reports. The principal evaluates the Dean TOSA at least annually.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervision over all certified and classified staff at the school site, directly or through subordinate supervisors.

WORK CONTACTS

Frequent contact with teachers, students, parents, district staff, and state personnel. Contact with subordinates to manage and coach.
