Job Summary
The 5th–12th Grade School Counselor supports students’ academic, social-emotional, and career development through a comprehensive school counseling program. This position works collaboratively with students, staff, families, and community partners to ensure all students are supported and prepared for success in school and beyond.
Primary Responsibilities Academic Development- Assist students with course selection and academic planning aligned to graduation requirements
- Monitor student progress and provide interventions for at-risk students
- Support transitions (5th to middle school, middle to high school, high school to postsecondary)
- Coordinate standardized testing (e.g., ISASP, ACT, FAST) and communicate results
- Collaborate with teachers and administration to support student achievement
- Provide individual and group counseling services
- Support students with behavioral, emotional, and social challenges
- Assist in crisis intervention and response (threats, trauma, safety concerns)
- Collaborate on behavior intervention plans and MTSS/PBIS frameworks
- Promote a positive school climate and student well-being
- Guide students in career exploration and postsecondary planning
- Assist with college applications, scholarships, and financial aid (FAFSA)
- Coordinate dual enrollment and career/technical education opportunities
- Organize career fairs, college visits, and job shadowing experiences
- Support Individual Career and Academic Planning (ICAP) processes
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and planning
- Facilitate parent meetings related to academic, behavioral, and postsecondary planning
- Connect families with community resources when needed
- Serve as a liaison between school and external agencies
- Implement and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with American School Counselor Association standards
- Maintain accurate student records and documentation (confidentiality required)
- Use data to drive decision-making and improve student outcomes
- Participate in school improvement initiatives and committees
- Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff
- Participate in IEP, 504, MTSS, and problem-solving team meetings
- Provide professional input on student needs and interventions
- Support school-wide initiatives related to student success and climate
