Job Description Position SummaryThe Preschool Paraprofessional plays an important role in helping build the foundation for each child’s future success. This position works closely with the preschool teacher to create a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment that supports the academic, social‑emotional, physical, and communication growth of all students, including those with special needs.
Essential Responsibilities- Support the classroom teacher in implementing daily lessons, routines, and learning activities.
- Build positive relationships with preschool students and foster a welcoming, inclusive classroom environment.
- Assist in meeting the needs of all learners, including students with disabilities and those receiving specialized services.
- Lead small‑group and individual learning activities as directed by the classroom teacher.
- Prepare, organize, and maintain instructional materials, classroom centers, and learning environments.
- Observe students and assist with documenting student growth, progress, and learning.
- Support classroom management by encouraging positive behavior, independence, and social skills.
- Assist students with daily routines, transitions, meals, toileting, dressing, and other self‑help skills as needed.
- Be physically able and willing to sit, kneel, and work on the floor with young children throughout the day, as well as frequently transition between floor‑level and standing activities.
- Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and families to support student success.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all district policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or administration.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a collaborative preschool team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Genuine passion for working with young children.
- Iowa Para educator Certificate.
- Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Education, or a related field.
- Previous experience working with preschool-aged children, including children with disabilities or diverse learning needs.
- Ability to lift, carry, and assist young children as needed.
- Ability to frequently bend, kneel, squat, reach, and transition between sitting on the floor and standing.
- Ability to actively supervise children during classroom, playground, and other school activities.
