Middle School 6th Grade Literacy/Social Studies Teacher

The 6th Grade Literacy/Social Studies Teacher provides engaging, standards-based instruction in English Language Arts and social studies for students in grade six. This position focuses on developing students' reading comprehension, writing, communication, critical thinking, and civic understanding while fostering curiosity, collaboration, and responsible citizenship. The teacher collaborates with colleagues, instructional coaches, and support staff to deliver high-quality instruction aligned with district curriculum and Iowa Academic Standards.

This role plays a key part in supporting student growth, preparing students for continued middle school success, and creating a positive, inclusive classroom environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver standards-based instruction in English Language Arts and social studies aligned with district curriculum and Iowa Academic Standards.
  • Design and implement engaging lessons that develop reading, writing, speaking, listening, research, and critical thinking skills.
  • Foster students' understanding of history, geography, civics, economics, and global perspectives through inquiry-based learning.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, including collaborative learning, discussion, project-based learning, primary source analysis, and technology integration.
  • Assess student learning using formative and summative assessments; use data to inform instruction and provide targeted support.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including advanced learners and students requiring additional support.
  • Implement interventions and supports within a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework.
  • Create a positive classroom environment that promotes literacy, respectful dialogue, collaboration, and student engagement.
  • Integrate authentic reading and writing experiences across the curriculum to strengthen literacy skills.
  • Encourage students to think critically, analyze multiple perspectives, and apply evidence to support ideas and conclusions.
  • Collaborate with grade-level and content-area teams to plan instruction, analyze data, and improve student outcomes.
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, and staff regarding academic progress and classroom expectations.
  • Provide accommodations and modifications as required by IEPs, 504 plans, or individual learning needs.
  • Utilize instructional technology and digital tools to enhance learning, research, collaboration, and student engagement.
  • Supervise students in classrooms and assigned school settings, including hallways and common areas.
  • Participate in team meetings, professional learning communities (PLCs), professional development, and district trainings.
  • Promote and adhere to district policies, procedures, and professional standards of conduct.

Education and Related

Work Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, Middle School Education, or a related field required. Experience teaching upper elementary or middle school students (grades 5-8) preferred. Experience teaching English Language Arts and/or social studies content preferred.

Licenses, Registrations, or

Certifications:

Criminal background check required. Valid State of Iowa teaching license required. Appropriate Iowa endorsement (Elementary Classroom K-6 and/or Middle School Language Arts and/or Social Studies endorsement) required.

Technical Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

Knowledge of English Language Arts and social studies content, instructional strategies, and best practices for adolescent learners. Understanding of literacy development, reading comprehension, writing instruction, research skills, and disciplinary literacy. Knowledge of historical inquiry, civic engagement, geography, economics, and culturally responsive instructional practices. Ability to analyze student data and adjust instruction to improve outcomes. Ability to design and deliver engaging, differentiated instruction for diverse learners.

Ability to integrate technology and digital tools into instruction. Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills. Effective interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills. Ability to support a culturally responsive and inclusive classroom environment. Ability to maintain student safety, follow safety procedures, and report concerns appropriately. Ability to stay current with district standards, data privacy requirements, and cybersecurity practices related to student information.
