Term of employmentPart‑time itinerant position. Work schedule and assignment will be determined based upon student needs, service requirements, and county programming. Position to begin with the 2026‑2027 school year.
JOB DESCRIPTIONPursuant to WV Code §18A-1-1:
"Classroom teacher" means a professional educator who has a direct instructional or counseling relationship with students and who spends the majority of his or her time in that capacity.
Under the direction of the Director of Special Education and building principals, the Itinerant Teacher of Gifted Education provides specialized educational services for identified gifted students throughout Pocahontas County Schools. The teacher develops and delivers differentiated, enriched, and accelerated instruction designed to address the unique academic, creative, leadership, and problem‑solving needs of gifted learners. The teacher serves as case manager for assigned gifted students;
coordinates the development, implementation, monitoring, and annual review of Individual Education Plans (IEPs); participates in referral, screening, eligibility, and reevaluation processes; monitors student progress toward educational goals; and collaborates with classroom teachers, administrators, families, and other stakeholders to ensure appropriate services and supports are provided. The teacher provides consultation regarding the education of gifted learners and maintains all required records and documentation in accordance with state and county requirements.
The Itinerant Teacher of Gifted Education performs duties consistent with the expectations of a professional educator as defined by West Virginia Code, West Virginia Board of Education policy, and Pocahontas County Board of Education policy.
QUALIFICATIONS- Valid West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate.
- Gifted Education endorsement required or eligibility to obtain appropriate Gifted Education authorization in accordance with WVDE requirements.
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-10
- Applicants who have recent unsatisfactory evaluations will not be considered eligible for consideration.
- Applicants who demonstrate unsatisfactory interview performance are not eligible for consideration.
- Applicants who receive unfavorable reference recommendations will not be eligible for consideration.
- Applicants who have been dismissed or who have had their contracts non‑renewed for cause by another school district are not eligible for consideration.
- Demonstrating Knowledge:Demonstrates current and thorough knowledge of gifted education, differentiated instruction, enrichment strategies, acceleration options, curriculum development, student assessment practices, and applicable state standards. Maintains knowledge of state and county requirements related to gifted education services.
- Designing Instruction:Develops and implements engaging learning experiences that promote advanced thinking, creativity, inquiry, research, communication, innovation, leadership, and problem‑solving skills. Designs instruction that extends beyond grade‑level expectations and supports student strengths, interests, and talents.
- Assessing Student Learning:Uses formative and summative assessment data to monitor student progress, evaluate instructional effectiveness, and develop learning goals and outcomes for gifted students. Assists in the screening and evaluation of students referred for gifted education services as appropriate.
