The special education teacher is responsible for establishing goal‑oriented teaching strategies based on proven instructional techniques that benefit students with disabilities within a comprehensive life skills program. Instruction is related to functional curriculum domains – domestic, vocational, recreational, community, functional academics. This person will adhere to the LCSD Professional Standards for Licensed Employees as outlined in policy and the CBA and report directly to the school site administrator.

• Follow mandated compliance standards established by the Federal, State, or District regulations relative to program development and implementation.
• Maintain appropriate student records and submit required reports and other needed information within designated time limits. Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations.
• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding records and information obtained in the course of professional service with respect to students, parents, and other staff members, unless disclosure serves professional purposes or is required by law.
• Demonstrate acceptable command of the English language in written and oral communication.
• Carry out clerical duties such as attendance, budgeting of materials, recording of grades, etc., promptly and accurately.
• Attend and participate in all required training.
• Manage and assign additional adult student support as necessary (i.e., paraprofessional).
• Maintain accurate and timely records in Power School.
• Provide instruction related to functional curriculum domains – domestic, vocational, recreational, community, functional academics.
• Utilize research‑based instructional methods and materials (e.g., general education curriculum, Edmark, Touch Math, FACTER, LCCE, Syracuse).
• Provide meaningful, relevant activities for instruction.
• Ensure instruction occurs in natural settings (e.g., regular education classroom, community based).
• Employ age‑appropriate instructional materials and tasks; provide differentiated or multi‑leveled instruction; pre‑plan lessons so objectives are evident.
• Ensure that standards‑based instruction is occurring and students are assessed using the most appropriate testing (e.g., state alternate assessment).
• Use instructional adaptations to support student learning (e.g., picture cues & supports, student grouping, cooperative learning, sign language, individualized schedules).
• Teach functional communication skills and individualize communication tools (e.g., picture cards, picture display boards, picture schedules, sign language, voice output electronic devices, consequence maps).
• Address student behaviors individually through positive behavioral supports, support plans or appropriate goals and objectives.
• Monitor student progress through regular data collection; adjust individual plans as appropriate through annual IEP meetings or more frequently if appropriate.
