NV5 is looking for an Engineer to manage construction materials testing, special inspections personnel, and geotechnical projects in our Nevada City, California operations. The position involves managing and overseeing projects in the greater Sacramento area, Truckee/Tahoe, and the northern Sacramento Valley. The person must possess skills in problem‑solving, critical thinking, and be steadfast in the execution of assigned duties. The successful candidate should be a registered Civil Engineer in the State of California, or capable of obtaining their CA PE.

The person needs to be an effective leader and collaborator with an ability to manage a fleet of soil/concrete technicians, ICC Inspectors, and coordinate with multiple NV5 laboratories.

What We’re Looking For:
  • Licensed Civil Engineer in California (or ability to obtain within 12 months)
  • Experience with CA Division of State Architect (DSA) HCAI, and/or Caltrans Projects – preferred
  • Strong problem‑solving, critical thinking, and leadership skills

Responsibilities
  • Engineering Manager on Public/Private/DSA/HCAI projects.
  • Direct, review and monitor work performed by the materials testing and inspection personnel.
  • Review field and laboratory reports.
  • Review plans and specifications.
  • Prepare and/or review materials testing proposals.
  • Project Management:
    Manage projects from inception through completion and have primary responsibility for managing client expectations and ensuring that delivery meets expectations. Manage projects to meet client expectations for technical excellence, budget and schedule.
  • Participate in training and mentoring of staff.
  • Conduct annual and interim performance reviews. Monitor and assess progress toward performance goals.
  • Certifications:

    Assures that all accreditations and certifications of the laboratory and staff are maintained and up to date.
  • Maintaining client relationships and creating new project opportunities.
  • Position may require travel to work with other NV5 office locations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Geotechnical Engineering
  • 5 years of relevant experience with construction materials testing.
  • Registered Civil Engineer (PE) in California, or ability to obtain within 6 to 12 months or test cycle
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, think creatively, and problem solve.
  • Demonstrated experience with reviewing technical specifications and field/laboratory reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of building codes and construction industry standards. DSA and OSHPD experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Caltrans, AASHTO, and ASTM test methods about construction materials, including HMA, aggregate, soils, steel, masonry, and concrete.
  • Experience reviewing concrete/asphalt mix designs.
  • Experience overseeing materials testing and inspections.
  • Thorough understanding of accreditation policies for all relevant agencies, including Caltrans, DSA, AMRL, CCRL, HCAI, etc.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including MS Office.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
