The Sumitomo Biorational manufacturing site located on an expansive 73‑acre site in Osage, IA is a state‑of‑the‑art 130,000 square‑foot plant and is the largest purpose‑built biorational facility in the world. It serves as the manufacturing and quality control center for Sumitomo Biorational's broad portfolio of fermentation products.

JOB SUMMARY And KEY OBJECTIVES

The EHS Specialist will perform tactical activities to support environmental, health, and safety at the Sumitomo Biorational Osage facility and provide monthly support to the MGK Chaska facility. The individual will support implementation of programs that ensure compliance with the state, local, and federal regulations, as well as compliance with the company Responsible Care policies. The individual will support the execution of the overall safety program and culture for manufacturing, with a continual focus on safety excellence, compliance, and environmental excellence.

Functions
  • Provide support to the EHS Manager and Osage Site Leadership Team to achieve the EHS vision and goals through management commitment and employee ownership and engagement.
  • Serve as a point of contact for all employees to understand and support EHS daily activities.
  • Execute and track completion of site EHS compliance calendar activities.
  • Provide support in the development and delivery of training programs.
  • Solicit feedback from others to better understand and improve EHS initiatives.
  • Assist with incident and near‑miss investigations to determine root cause and implement appropriate countermeasures to mitigate risks.
  • Proactively identify and effectively communicate compliance risks to the organization.
  • Effectively communicate and teach regulatory and technical knowledge to operations staff to manage day‑to‑day compliance activities.
  • Perform compliance sampling and monitoring, data gathering, inspections and audits.
  • Assist with new hire orientation outlining expectations regarding safety rules and regulations.
  • Support department safety teams and ergonomic improvement teams.
  • Perform Job Hazard Analysis, Risk Factor Index determination, SPOT observations, as requested.
  • Support manufacturing safe work permits, lock‑out tag‑out and other activities.
  • Conduct building and grounds surveys on a periodic and regular basis to detect code violations, hazards, and incorrect work practices and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Travel:
Travel may be required to support other facilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS And EDUCATION
  • Minimum of 3 years of Environmental, Health & Safety experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA and EPA compliance and record‑keeping.
  • Strong communication skills in group presentations, individual interactions, and written documentation.
  • Ability to work independently, be a self‑starter, and as part of the team.
  • Demonstrated ability to use standard office software programs, including spreadsheets, word processing, and project management.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (major in Engineering, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field).
  • OSHA 30‑hour Certification.
  • Certification as CSP and / or CHMM is a plus.
