Location: Nevada

Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018.

Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations.

The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.

Job Description

Under the direction of the Chief Geotechnical Engineer, the Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for mine Geotechnical and/or geological duties, in both an open pit and underground mining environment, as required. The role also continuously aligns daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values.

Job Responsibilities
  • Implement best practices in geotechnical engineering, assist with mine designs, dewatering, and mining operations to ensure safety and achieve business objectives.
  • Carry out geotechnical/geological inspections, mapping, and documentation. Supervise and work with drilling and geotechnical instrumentation installations.
  • Collect, process, analyze and model geotechnical/geological characteristics of various rock masses for support of the surface and underground mine.
  • Process, analyze, and model data to understand the rock mass and its response to mining for purposes of excavation stability, mine design optimization, mine performance, and design compliance.
  • Manage the geotechnical and geological database.
  • Conduct geotechnical/geologic mapping, sampling, monitoring, and reporting to support site needs and corporate obligations.
  • Assist in the preparation of the daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly monitoring reports.
  • Responsible for implementing and enforcing the requirements of the Ground Control Management Plan.
  • Be on call during off‑hours as required by your work rotation.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including safety, environmental, confidentiality, and code of conduct.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
  • Exercise discretion and judgment in job performance consistently.
  • Work without risk or harm to self and others.
  • Maintain punctuality and regular attendance.
  • Help develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned by supervisor.
  • Be willing to learn new methods, technology, tools, and systems.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in geological engineering, geology, mining, or civil engineering is required.
  • Mining experience that includes familiarity with geotechnical design and rock mass characterization.
  • Working knowledge of mining‑based software (Deswik, Vulcan, Mine Sight, etc.) and geotechnical software, Rocscience software desirable.
  • General understanding of mining operations, ability to be a team player, with interest in a dynamic open pit and underground mining environment.
  • Working knowledge and skill with computers utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software. AutoCAD knowledge is advantageous but not required.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of management, employees, contractors, and consultants.
  • Ability to work independently and also as a member of the Technical Services team.
  • Demonstrated strong administrative, organizational, and technical writing skills.
  • Must be presently authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • This is NOT a remote position.
Reporting Relationships

Reports into the Chief Geotechnical Engineer.

Legislative Requirements

US work permit required.
