Project Overview

Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Once complete, the mine and processing facilities will produce more lithium carbonate than any other facility in the United States by far – enough to power 1 million electric vehicles per year. As the EPCM contractor for Lithium Americas, Bechtel is responsible for managing and integrating the efforts of a team of contractors engineering and building the facility.

We are also managing procurement of about $1 Billion in goods and services. Earth work began in 2023 and design and procurement of long‑lead equipment is underway. The project is located in the high desert and wide‑open spaces of north‑central Nevada about 25 miles from the Oregon border, 1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada and 3 hours northeast of Reno.

Planned with sustainability and the environment in mind, the facility will use its excess process heat to generate electricity and will recycle process water up to seven times. Once the second phase of the project is complete, Thacker Pass will produce more than 16 times the current U.S. output of lithium. In this role, you will provide technical oversight of the project’s ES&H compliance activities through inspection of project field execution activities. You will assist project and construction management in implementing and complying with project safety requirements and in addressing ES&H issues as they arise during project execution. You will work directly with other project‑level functions (e.g., engineering, construction, subcontracts, procurement, project controls, document controls) to assist them in addressing the applicable ES&H requirements in their work activities and conduct daily site surveillance to verify adequate use of PPE, routine equipment inspections, project ES&H initiatives.

• Provide assistance in a wide variety of Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) disciplines to facilitate implementation of Bechtel's ES&H program and Management System, including aiding compliance with Bechtel's ES&H standards, applicable regulatory requirements, and contractual commitments.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of programs, systems, and procedures necessary for the safety and health of employees and protection of the environment and communities.
• Maintain ES&H databases, inclusive of incident events, audit/assessment findings, and corrective actions.
• Perform statistical analysis of ES&H data to help identify performance trends and contributing factors as part of continuous improvement.
• Identify and support any unique software systems and electronic innovation used by ES&H personnel.
• Lead teams in conducting risk assessment, studies, mitigation planning, and monitoring in response to ES&H issues.
• Prepare communications, write reports, and prepare documents for program execution and records retention.
• Assist with incident notifications, lead investigations, and prepare incident investigation reports.
• Recommend and implement improvements in processes, procedures, and work activities to minimize hazard potential.
• Participate in and may lead employee training, emergency preparedness, and quality assurance programs.
• Research moderately complex issues and provide regulatory interpretation and technical advice.
• Provide support to ES&H field and office personnel, inclusive of all ES&H disciplines.

Requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree (or international equivalent) related to environmental, safety, health, or science‑related discipline and 5–8 years of relevant experience or 9–12 years of relevant work experience.

• Knowledge of OSHA 1926 and 1910 required.
