Minimum qualifications for such appointment will be in accordance with the minimum standards as set forth by the Law Enforcement Academy Council.
If an applicant is not able to attend our testing, they shall attempt to test at alternate sites/agencies within the state and transfer scores for the POST and physical agility testing. If no alternate dates are available within the state, applicant shall give written request prior to closing of the posting November 25th,2025 to the civil service commission with the reason for the alternate testing date.
The commission will decide if alternate date will be provided.

Immediate Supervisor: Sheriff
Shift: Assigned shift rotation of 6 days on and 3 days off schedule including work on nights, holidays and weekends. Additional hours as needed.

Salary Range: $ 33.17 to $42.00 hourly based on experience

Job Description:
The County Sheriff is elected, and a Sheriff’s Deputy is employed directly by the Sheriff. A Deputy is expected to perform all duties to the Sheriff’s level of expectation.
Butler County has around 15,000 residents and one of the advantages of working for a smaller county like Butler is that you will be involved in all aspects of Law Enforcement very early in your new career.
Butler County Deputies have duties in the Jail, Courthouse, Schools, Cities and Rural Areas around Butler County.
Deputies will work with prisoners and staff in the Jail and Sheriff’s Office, along with our citizens, emergency service providers and other agencies in and around the rest of the county.
Deputies on routine patrol provide service to the citizens by enforcing traffic and criminal law while also rendering assistance through investigations, working with mental health patients, prisoners and other general service work.
Some service examples include:- Quiet disturbances and arrest law violators.
- Serving of summons, subpoena and other civil paperwork.
- Patrol the county and cities in vehicle and on foot.
- Provide investigation and traffic control at accident sites.
- Render CPR, AED and other lifesaving medical assistance as needed.
- Investigate crimes and suspicious activity.
- Transport and escort prisoners and subjects with mental health issues.
- Operate radios, vehicles and weapons of various kinds.
- Locates and takes persons into custody on arrest warrants.
- Ability to upload, type or record data on computer system using a variety of programs.

Qualification Requirements:- Must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of Iowa or intends to become a resident upon being employed.
- Non-residents of Butler County are required to establish residency in the county within six (6) months from date of hire.
- Applicant is of good moral character
- Applicant is not addicted to drugs or alcohol.
- Must have a valid Iowa Driver's License, chauffeur’s license, or CDL issued by the State of Iowa and be insurable for driving under county insurance company policies.
- Applicant will also be subject to The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) test, or a similar test approved by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, polygraph test, Criminal Background Check and fingerprint search shall be taken before employment as a Deputy Sheriff
- Applicant will also be subject to post offer, pre-employment drug and physical testing.
