As a member of the interdisciplinary team, you contribute professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. You maintain a practice environment that reflects the ANA Code for Nurses, the Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health, and the Professional Nurse Practice Model, collaborating with other care providers.

Responsibilities Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
  • Assess patients and families, provide education, and make referrals to ensure safe and continuous care.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans collaboratively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Complete documentation promptly to ensure accurate legal records.
  • Deliver high-quality care using the nursing process, demonstrating knowledge and skills relevant to your specialty and adhering to policies and standards.
  • Use a holistic approach considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and other relevant factors for the patient population served.
  • Delegate tasks and provide guidance to other healthcare providers, holding them accountable for their roles in the care plan.
  • Apply critical thinking to make independent judgments, maintaining responsibility for patient conditions.
  • Administer medications and treatments within your scope of practice.
Development & Patient Education
  • Engage in professional development and share knowledge through networking and research.
  • Assess and select appropriate teaching strategies based on patient and family needs, culture, gender, and comprehension levels.
  • Consult hospital resources for specialized education.
  • Prioritize safety by preventing errors, infections, and accidents, reporting concerns immediately.
  • Incorporate patient and family teaching throughout hospitalization, including care plans, procedures, and discharge instructions.
  • Use evidence-based learning methods.
  • Assist in orienting new staff and act as a resource or mentor, participating in preceptor roles as appropriate.
  • Participate in educational activities for students and interns.
  • Contribute to department and hospital performance improvement and strategic initiatives.
Basic UPH Performance Criteria
  • Demonstrate UnityPoint Health values and adhere to policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain reliable attendance to meet department needs.
  • Keep current licenses and certifications required for the role.
  • Follow HIPAA, DIA, OSHA, and other regulatory guidelines.
  • Complete annual education and competency requirements.
  • Understand compliance requirements for programs like Medicare and Medicaid, reporting concerns appropriately.
