Job Role SummaryThe MIH EMT provides patient care in the community for both short-term and long-term management of referred patients. The EMT is expected to function as a fully participating member of a patient’s medical home care team. The EMT provides emergency medical services as directed by IEMS medical protocols.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Proactively contributes to IEMS mission, with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County
- Models IEMS vision:
The vision of IEMS is to serve the citizens and visitors of Marion County, Indiana with high quality “out of hospital” care based upon sound science and academic research while continuously improving quality with accountability and financial sustainment - Bridge the gap between patients and the health and social service systems
- Improve quality of care by aiding communication between provider and patient
- Promote wellness by providing appropriate health information and education to patients.
- Assist guests to obtain preventive services referring and linking the patients to a primary care physician
- Help guests to manage their chronic conditions through education about their treatment plans and working with providers to ensure plan is acceptable to the family and caregiver.
- Assist guests to navigate the health and human services systems
- Build relationships and interact professionally with local health and social service providers
- Help patients to complete and submit Indiana Medicaid (FSSA) applications when necessary
- Provide direct services including Emergency medical care and assessments per Marion County (IEMS) protocols
- Document all activities as detailed by direct supervisors
- Work collaboratively with and effectively within a team
- Employees and local resource providers within Marion County
- Continuously expand knowledge and understanding of community resources, services, and programs provided.
- Manages data entry into the electronic medical record (ePCR)
Job Duties
- Demonstrates good communication skills
- Exhibits legal and ethical professional conduct, follows organizational protocols/processes, and maintains HIPAA confidentiality.
- Functions effectively as a team member and responds to change in a constructive manner
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
- Minimum of 2 years of organized training in a healthcare field (i.e., EMT‑B)
- Strong customer service skills required
- Excellent patient assessment skills required
- Experience with speaking with and educating the public
- Passion for public health initiatives or community outreach
- Minimum of high school diploma or GED required
- Valid Indiana driver’s license that meets Indianapolis EMS’s driving policy requirements
- Valid Indiana EMT‑B certification
- Must be able to relate to a variety of people with different cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, and education levels.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, coworkers, patients and families
- Ability to work independently
- Knowledge of available community resources and required application processes
- Ability to make sound decisions regarding need and urgency of patient needs
- Must be able to work effectively in a sometimes stressful environment
- Friendly, outgoing personality
- Teaching/Coaching skills
- Basic computer skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine caring attitude for patients and staff
- Detail oriented and ability to critically think independently
