The WPPA Physician Assistant is responsible for practicing medicine under physician supervision, including conducting examinations and writing prescriptions. Within the physician–physician assistant relationship, the PA exercises autonomy in medical decision making in a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. The role may also include responsibilities for education, research, and administrative services.
Essential Functions- Understand and adhere to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- First Assist on surgical procedures; first and second assist on total hip and knee procedures.
- Conduct physical exams, assess health status, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and treat illnesses including giving injections and suturing wounds.
- Consult with physicians as needed and refer to physicians for more complicated cases or cases outside the PA’s scope of work.
- Monitor therapies and provide continuity of care.
- Triage patient calls and evaluate patient problems, responding to emergencies including the use of CPR.
- Provide counsel to patient/family on preventive health care.
- Document patient information and care in the medical record, maintaining confidentiality, and may maintain departmental statistical databases for research purposes.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the medical model and the roles of physicians and physician assistants.
- Show familiarity with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine, and physical diagnosis.
- Demonstrate skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data.
- Accurately evaluate patient problems in person or via phone and provide appropriate advice, intervention, or referral.
- Make responsible decisions within the scope of PA practice.
- Collaborate effectively with physicians on complicated cases.
- Educate patients, families, and staff in a user‑friendly manner.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree required;
Master’s degree preferred.
- One year of experience as a Physician Assistant in an appropriate clinical setting preferred.
- Current White Plains Hospital Physician Assistant Collaborative Practice Agreement required.

- Physician Assistant – New York State Board of Medicine.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – American Heart Association, required upon hire.
