Essential Functions
Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and BehaviorsMust maintain all records as per regulatory agencies requirements – CAP and NYSDOH and perform monthly and annual review of all required standardsWrite and revise and maintain SOPs for policy and procedure manualAssist in Cytology Aspiration procedures scheduled from Ambulatory Surgery, Breast Imaging, Endoscopy, Off Site Radiology, and Radiology DepartmentScreen gynecological and non-gynecological cases daily and in a timely mannerSign out cases with the Pathologist according to scheduleAssist with preparation, staining and cover slipping of cytology specimens as neededLabel all Cytology stained slides, compare name, number of slides, clinical information, and gross description against Cytology requisitionsChange and clean equipment and solutions in the Cytology Aspiration procedure tray and keep supplies stocked as neededSchedule per diem coverage and supervisePrepare and submit quality control/quality assurance reportsMeet regularly with Laboratory Director and AdministratorMaintain CME log for all members of sectionInterview cytology candidates for employmentMaintain and write competency reviews for CytotechnologistsAssist with cytotechnologists performance appraisalsAssist with disciplinary action as needed for CytologyOrder supplies and maintain inventoryParticipate in any other departmental activities as directed by the Laboratory Director or Pathology SupervisorPerform all other related duties as assignedQualifications
- BS with ASCP registry and/or certified cytology school degree required
- Minimum 3 years experience screening gynecological and non-gynecological specimens and fine‑needle aspirates
- Familiar with Bethesda system for Cytology reporting
- Attention to detail, adaptability, flexibility, and organization
- Frequent computer and laboratory equipment usage
- Ability to rapidly assess and respond to situational needs of the department
- Cytotechnologist – New York State Board of Clinical Laboratory Technology – required upon hire
- ASCP – International Medical Laboratory Scientist – required if no certified cytology school degree upon hire
- Thin Prep Certification – required upon hire
