Certified Medication Aide (CMA) - Long-Term Care
Position Summary
A Certified Medication Aide (CMA) in a long-term care facility is responsible for administering prescribed medications to residents and assisting with daily healthcare needs under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The CMA ensures safe medication practices while supporting resident comfort, dignity, and well-being.
Key ResponsibilitiesMedication Administration
- Administer oral, topical, inhaled, and other approved medications as prescribed
- Follow the "Five Rights" of medication administration (right patient, medication, dose, time, route)
- Accurately document medication administration in medical records
- Monitor residents for side effects or adverse reactions and report concerns to nursing staff
- Measure and record vital signs as required before or after medication administration
Resident Care Support
- Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting
- Support mobility, transfers, and positioning to ensure safety and comfort
- Provide compassionate, respectful care that maintains resident dignity
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in charts and electronic health records
- Report changes in residents' physical or mental condition to licensed nurses
- Communicate effectively with residents, families, and healthcare team members
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to facility policies, state regulations, and infection control standards
- Ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of medications
- Participate in safety drills and maintain a clean, hazard-free environment
Team Collaboration
- Work under the supervision of an RN or LPN
- Collaborate with nursing staff and other caregivers to deliver coordinated care
- Attend staff meetings and ongoing training sessions
- Current Certified Medication Aide (CMA) certification (Iowa)
- Active Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification (required)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current CPR/First Aid certification (preferred or required)
- Knowledge of basic pharmacology and medication administration procedures
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to follow instructions and safety protocols
- Compassion and patience when working with elderly or disabled residents
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
- Long-term care facilities
- Requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting residents (with assistance or equipment)
- May involve exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids
