Overview

Under the direction of a licensed professional, the Patient Care Technician delivers hands‑on patient care and comfort, assists with clinical procedures and technical tasks, and accurately observes, reports, and documents patient status. The role supports safe, efficient unit operations by focusing on personal care, mobility, nutrition, hydration, elimination, and prevention of complications, while preparing patients and environments for procedures. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, the PCT provides compassionate, patient- and family‑centered support across diverse care settings to promote quality outcomes and a positive experience.

Responsibilities Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
  • Assists patients with tasks they are unable to do for themselves, (ADL’s, feeding, grooming, mobility, etc).
  • Monitors the health of patients via vital signs, glucose assessments, safety rounds, and reports as appropriate to the nurse.
  • Observes patient’s condition, and any changes in their physical, emotional or mental status, and communicates the status of the patient, including any changes, periodically, to a supervisor, case manager, or nurse.
  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
  • Follows infection prevention measures.
Environment
  • Assists the team to ensure adequate stock and supply is available for patient care.
  • Supports the team in keeping patient rooms and the work area safe and clean.
Clerical
  • Assists the team to respond to patient calls in a timely fashion.
  • Supports the medical team in handling paperwork.
Basic UPH Performance Criteria
  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, DIA, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Participates in department/hospital meetings, programs, performance improvement, etc.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
