Portuguese Medical Interpreter- Per Diem

Please note that this is an in‑person position.

• Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face‑to‑face or telephone encounters.
• Acts as a liaison between patients and staff.
• Informs clinicians about cultural considerations when treating Portuguese‑speaking patients.
• Interpreter for ancillary departments.
• Interprets between non‑clinical staff and patients as needed.
• Translates into Portuguese patient information materials, consent forms, etc.
• Edits translated materials.
• Identifies areas where the hospital can better meet the needs of Portuguese‑speaking communities, e.g., outreach, signage, etc.
• Explains interpreter model to clinicians and patients.
• Assists with training staff interpreters.
• Orients patients to the hospital as needed, e.g., L & D tours, community events, etc.
• Assists in the coordination/scheduling of freelance interpreters.
• Assists with data entry/data collection.
• Completes interpreter paperwork.
• Assists with scheduling and confirming patient appointments.
• Supports patients outside of their clinical appointments as needed with issues relating to their care at the hospital.
• Contributes towards developing an environment that is welcoming and responsive to Portuguese‑speaking patients.
• Other duties as needed.

• Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree or experience.
• Excellent rating on Interpreter Assessment Evaluation.
• Bi‑lingual (oral and written) bi‑cultural skills.
• Medical interpreting skills, including accuracy and memory.
• Basic anatomy and physiology vocabulary in English and Portuguese.
• Experience working as an interpreter in a clinical environment.
• Ability to work well as a team with clinicians and patients.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

• Normal office environment.
• Outpatient clinical environment with some exposure to infectious diseases and cleaning solutions.
• Adherence to safety procedures minimizes the risk of injury.
• Normal office environment for administrative duties.

$25.04 - $37.56 per hour.
