The Amana Community is seeking a new General Manager to lead our utility company! The Amana Society Service Company provides electricity and water utilities to approximately 1,500 residents and over 160 businesses in and around the Amana Colonies. While it is an investor-owned utility and owned by the Amana Society shareholders, it operates similar to a municipal utility, providing services to the community.

Job SummaryThe General Manager is responsible for overseeing the financial and operational management of the Amana Society Service Company (ASSC), ensuring the efficient delivery of utility services while maintaining profitability and regulatory compliance. This individual will play a key role in managing resources, improving operational efficiency, and fostering strong relationships with stakeholders, including regulators, customers, and employees. The General Manager reports to the President/CEO of Amana Society and leads a staff of 8-10 team members.
Job Responsibilities 1. Budgeting and Financial Management- Oversee financial planning, forecasting, and analysis to monitor performance against budget; identify financial risks, opportunities, inefficiencies and areas for improvement.
- Prepare and present budgets, capital expenditure requests, and other financial reports to senior management and the Amana Society Board of Directors.
- Understand and manage rates for the service territory, ensuring ASSC remains competitive while maintaining profitability.
- Ensure cost control measures are implemented across operations without compromising service quality or regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with senior management to set long‑term goals and strategies for operational growth and financial stability.
- Manage day‑to‑day utility operations, ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of services.
- Ensure all facilities and equipment are properly maintained and in compliance with federal and state regulations; prioritize and schedule maintenance and improvements.
- Implement innovative operational strategies to improve productivity, minimize costs, and enhance service quality.
- Develop and maintain operational performance metrics, ensuring targets are met or exceeded.
- Assess market conditions, emerging trends, and technological advancements to inform business strategy.
- Identify and mitigate financial, operational, and regulatory risks.
- Develop contingency plans for unexpected disruptions or emergencies, including natural disasters or infrastructure failures.
- Prepare and submit applicable annual reports for state and federal agencies.
- Coordinate with Human Resources, IT, Marketing and Accounting as needed for support.
- Develop and lead a high‑performing team, ensuring operational and administrative tasks are efficiently and effectively performed and staffing levels and resources align with demand.
- Promote a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous improvement within the organization; develop and encourage business‑specific employee training.
- Make sure all safety policies and procedures are followed and all employees participate in continuing training to ensure their safety.
- Maintain knowledge of the community and businesses ASSC serves.
- Represent ASSC in the community and at regulatory agencies such as the Resale Power Group of Iowa (RPGI), Amana Colonies Historical Sites Foundation (ACHSF) and other agencies.
- Interact with county, state, and local officials including the DOT, DNR, utility commission and other agencies which may affect or potentially affect ASSC operation.
- Educate and communicate with customers about electric and water use and necessary rate adjustments.
- Address customer complaints and issues promptly, maintaining a positive company reputation.
- Develop strategies for improving customer retention and engagement
- Basic knowledge of water and electrical utility operations; strong knowledge of utility operations, infrastructure, and industry regulations.
