Job Description

The Facilities Supervisor is responsible for the planning, maintenance, operation, and safety of all district buildings and grounds. The role provides leadership for custodial, maintenance, and grounds personnel; ensures facilities support the educational mission of the district; oversees preventive maintenance programs; and manages facility-related projects, budgets, and regulatory compliance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Leadership & Management
  • Supervise and evaluate custodial, maintenance, and grounds staff.
  • Develop work schedules, assign daily tasks, and ensure high-quality performance.
  • Provide training in safety procedures, equipment operation, and best practices.
  • Promote a positive, service-oriented culture within the facilities team.
Facilities Operations
  • Oversee daily operations of all buildings, including custodial services, HVAC systems, electrical systems, plumbing, and general maintenance.
  • Maintain an effective preventive maintenance program for all district facilities and equipment.
  • Respond to work orders in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensure buildings are secure, operational, and prepared for school, events, and activities.
Planning & Project Management
  • Develop short-term and long-range facility improvement plans in coordination with the superintendent.
  • Oversee contracted services, building projects, and repairs.
  • Participate in capital project planning and provide technical recommendations to district leadership and the Board of Education.
  • Manage energy efficiency initiatives and building automation systems where applicable.
Budget & Purchasing
  • Monitor and manage the facilities budget, including supplies, equipment, maintenance contracts, and project expenditures.
  • Recommend and purchase supplies, tools, and equipment in alignment with district purchasing procedures.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of custodial and maintenance supplies.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure district facilities comply with federal, state, and local health, safety, and environmental regulations, including ADA, OSHA, fire code, and Department of Education requirements.
  • Coordinate regular safety inspections and maintain required documentation.
  • Oversee snow removal, grounds safety, and emergency facility response.
  • Serve as a member of the district safety and crisis response team.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Work closely with administrators, teachers, coaches, and support staff to ensure facility needs are met.
  • Communicate effectively about timelines, work orders, and project status.
  • Assist with scheduling facility usage for school and community events.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; advanced training or certification in maintenance, facilities management, HVAC, or related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in facility maintenance, custodial management, construction trades, or related work.
  • Ability to read blueprints, building plans, and technical documents.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate staff effectively.
  • Working knowledge of building codes, safety practices, and preventive maintenance.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a facilities/maintenance director in a school district or similar organization.
  • Certification in HVAC, electrician, plumbing, or facilities management.
  • Experience with building automation systems, energy management, and capital projects.
  • Knowledge of Iowa school regulations and inspection requirements.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as climbing, bending, and working in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate maintenance equipment and tools.
Work Environment
  • May require evening or weekend work during emergency situations, weather events, or district activities.
  • Frequent movement throughout district facilities and grounds.
