General Merchandise Department Manager – East and West Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Overview

The Department Manager leads overall team member engagement and accounts for area operations and financial results, driving recognition, feedback, coaching, training, development, succession planning, and process improvements while upholding Meijer culture and standards.

Responsibilities
  • Engage with team members in span of care to ensure appropriate onboarding, training, development, coaching, and feedback.
  • Identify talent and participate in career discussions to support staffing and a diversified talent pipeline for team member and leadership roles.
  • Participate in candid discussions to uphold Meijer standards and provide growth opportunities.
  • Manage area operations and financial results by executing corporate plans, maximizing sales and productivity, and owning budget line items in the P&L.
  • Drive safety and compliance throughout the store and manage overall condition management and compliance procedures.
  • Ensure Team Leaders and Leads provide guidance, assign daily work assignments, and address training needs.
  • Identify and implement process improvements; serve as steward of Meijer culture.
  • Support management of shrink, productivity, safety, scheduling, forecasting staffing needs, and conflict resolution.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 4+ years of retail/grocery or customer service experience.
  • Progressive leadership experience preferred.
  • Passion to provide industry‑leading service.
  • Clear and precise communication with team members.
  • Analytical ability to interpret financial and statistical information for informed decisions.
  • Leadership ability to promote safe working practices.
  • Proactive, creative thinking applied to business improvement.
  • Strong business acumen and deep understanding of seasonal and diverse merchandising.
  • Innovative attitude and commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.
