The Sumitomo Biorational manufacturing site located on an expansive 73-acre site in Osage, IA is a state of the art 130,000 square foot plant and is the largest purpose-built biorational facility in the world. It serves as the manufacturing and quality control center for Sumitomo Biorational's broad portfolio of fermentation products.
Description of Job:
As a Maintenance/Wastewater Technician at Sumitomo Biorational, you will perform duties related to the operation, maintenance, and control of the Wastewater Pretreatment Plant (WWPTP). You will monitor equipment, gauges and charts; records data related to water quality to ensure water is properly treated before releasing it to the municipal wastewater facility. You will keep management apprised of unique situations and problems encountered and identify and report safety, environmental and other work requirements for resolution.
You will also perform as off shift lead maintenance technician and central utility building equipment technician.

Monday – Friday 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
Essential Functions:
- Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of process waste into WWPTP
- Responds to all maintenance calls from the main facility. Typical equipment includes pumps, seals, electric motors, and other process equipment.
- Monitors and responds to issues in the Central Utilities Building (CUB), including but not limited to boilers, chillers, air compressors and purified water systems.
- Performs preventive maintenance on all WW equipment, some main facility equipment.
- Handles and controls water and industrial wastewater treatment using hazardous chemicals.
- Operates, maintains and repairs process units such as clarifiers, aeration basins pumps, valves and dewatering equipment that has a direct effect on the treatment process.
- Responds to and cleans up hazardous spills as required.
- At all times wears appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as determined by position and duties.
- Complies with health and safety rules and procedures; performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.
- Works at varying elevations.
- Operates a forklift.
- Keeps a neat and clean work environment.
- Completes required training.
- Required to walk, climb stairs, lift up to 50 lbs., open and close valves, stand and sit.
- Must be available to work other shifts as directed, to include weekends/holidays and on-call duties.
- Must be able to work in extreme temperatures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalency.
- One (1) year’s experience as a water or wastewater operator.
- Three (3) years’ maintenance mechanical experience
- Experience performing operations, chemical testing, maintenance and repairs to water distribution, collection, treatment, and utility plumbing systems, use technical manuals, bulletins or manufacture’s specifications while performing maintenance.
- Ability to obtain Grade 4 water and wastewater license.
