Job Description

Wages, Days, and Hours : $15.64/Hr 165 day contract; 7.5 hrs/day

Basic Functions :
Responsible for providing health care services to students under the supervision of the school nurse.

Education
  • High school diploma
  • Certification in multimedia first aid
  • Certification in CPR commensurate with age group
  • Completion of a state approved medication administration course
  • Possession of a valid Iowa driver license
  • Trained in the identification and reporting of child abuse
  • Proficient in utilizing Powerschool System
Abilities and Knowledge
  • Ability to relate positively and effectively with students, staff and parents.
  • Ability to recognize sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to read and follow directions accurately.
  • Ability to maintain health records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various computer software programs.
  • Knowledge of and ability to identify common health problems.
  • Knowledge of appropriate referral patterns.
  • Possess office and telephone procedures.
  • Ability to be trained in computer word processing/database functions.
  • High efficiency and organization.
  • Ability to problem solve various health or office situations.
  • Ability to deal with emergency situations.
  • Ability to use computers and related technology effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with general public.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrates strong work ethic, punctuality, creativity and a “sense of humor.”
  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain and effectively use answering machine, fax, laminating, and copy machines.
  • Demonstrates usage, punctuation, and spelling skills.
Health Paraprofessional Responsibilities
  • Provide first aid within limits outlined by the health office policies and in accordance with skills taught in approved first aid and CPR courses.
  • Administer medications and records according to the health office policy.
  • Contact school nurse in case of major illness or serious injury of a student or school personnel.
  • Contact the parents of the ill or injured students in accordance with established health office policy and, if necessary, prepare the student(s) to be transported.
  • Communicate with appropriate school personnel regarding disposition of student(s) sent to the health office.
  • Record health office visits, students’ symptoms and the disposition.
  • Assist in communicable disease prevention by reviewing and communicating immunization needs of students.
  • Assist with health screening activities.
  • Maintain and file health office records.
  • Maintain a clean and neat health room environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned per Health Services Supervisor, school nurse and/or building principal.
  • Provide transportation on an as needed basis.
Other Requirements
  • Ability to lift, push and pull up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Model to students and peers a commitment to appropriate public behavior toward all students, workplace, colleagues and the public.
