Position Overview
Works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator. The Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and supervises individual patient care on a nursing unit/department according to unit policies and procedures. Provides supervision of non‑RN personnel on the assigned unit. When assuming the charge role, delegates and supervises unit activities. May be required to work on other nursing units according to distribution of staff and patients.
Responsibilities- Assess the patient's physical and psychosocial condition on an ongoing basis throughout the continuum of care.
- Develop, communicate, and document a plan of care reflecting individualized patient problems and interventions to achieve desired outcomes, involving the patient, family, and healthcare team.
- Implement and coordinate the plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan of care and the patient's response to care, and readiness for discharge; revise the plan as needed and make referrals where indicated.
- Provide educational opportunities and document outcomes.
- Function as a charge nurse.
- Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self‑development as outlined in performance review.
- Perform other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
- Demonstrate competency in the care of the neuro patient.
- Demonstrate skill and knowledge in neuro assessment, airway management of the neuro patient, and assisting the physician during special neuro procedures.
- Perform pharyngeal, endotracheal, tracheostomy suctioning according to established policy and procedure; demonstrate skill and understanding of equipment and care of patient in a halo brace.
- Demonstrate skill and understanding of nursing responsibilities and interventions for patients on a ventilator.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Current registered nurse license in the state of Connecticut.
- Accountable to practice within the scope and standards of practice within the Nurse Practice Act of the state.
- Demonstrated integrity and adherence to professional standards.

Unit Information- Heart and Vascular Cardiac ICU (5‑1 SP) – fast‑paced, high‑acuity 14‑bed critical care unit caring for adult patients with complex cardiac and medical diagnoses. Nursing staff trained in advanced heart‑failure management, mechanical circulatory support, and advanced therapies.
- RN‑HVC Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU/WP3) – 18‑bed cardiac surgery unit specializing in care for complex post‑operative CABG, valve replacements, aortic dissection repairs, heart transplants, and LVAD implantation; unit handles ECMO cases.
- HVC Cardiovascular ICU and Stepdown (5‑4 SP) – 14‑bed hybrid unit with 8 ICU and 6 stepdown beds caring for post complex vascular surgery, aortic repairs, and post cardiac surgery patients.
