Job Summary

  • Assures delivery of quality department/clinical services in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards.
  • Promotes a positive, professional image as coach, mentor, problem solver and resource for staff.
  • Responsible for overall operations of the assigned department, including development of goals, personnel management, and budget accountability.
  • Maintains 24‑hour responsibility for nursing care provided on the unit.
  • Collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal, age‑appropriate patient care.
  • Provides hospital supervision as required and participates in evidence‑based care development.
  • Ensures employee compliance with hospital, Human Resources policies, and competency requirements.
  • Participates in the Performance Improvement Program and promotes a safe environment.
  • Supports hospital initiatives and functions as a positive change agent.
  • Engages in community service.
Essential Functions
  • Understand and adhere to WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  • Develop and submit departmental goals aligned with nursing and hospital strategic plans.
  • Conduct interviews, hire, evaluate, counsel, and terminate employees per hospital policy.
  • Schedule staff based on budgeted staffing plan and departmental needs.
  • Update FTE component of staffing budgets continuously.
  • Develop and submit operating and capital budgets, reporting variances to the Division Administrator.
  • Assure compliance with government, state regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Ensure completion of staff orientation, annual competency and education requirements.
  • Provide house supervision as required by the Division of Nursing.
  • Attend and participate in educational programs to maintain current knowledge.
  • Perform direct patient care as needed.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives to support quality metrics.
  • Develop evidence‑based standards, policies, and procedures as needed.
  • Achieve organizational goals for patient satisfaction.
  • Attend all required meetings.
  • Conduct monthly staff meetings, update staff and record meeting minutes.
  • Utilize multiple methodologies to communicate information.
  • Adhere to safety standards for employees and patients.
  • Participate in committees, task forces, projects as required.
  • Submit all required work reports.
  • Integrate patient rights and nursing ethics into practice.
  • Adhere to Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Delegate activities to staff according to NYS Nurse Practice Act.
  • Adhere to ANA Code of Nursing Ethics.
  • Adhere to all WPH standards of care, policies, and procedures.
  • Create and maintain a culture of shared governance.
  • Work with Magnet program director to align initiatives with strategic plan and critical components of a Magnet organization.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    • BSN required.
    • Minimum 2 years relevant acute care experience.
    • Basic management skills (low proficiency).
    • Previous management/leadership experience preferred.
    • Ability to function as a staff RN (high proficiency).
    • Excellent clinical skills (high proficiency).
    • Excellent written and verbal communication (high proficiency).
    • Teamwork (high proficiency).
    • Adaptability (high proficiency).
    • Planning, organization, and delegation skills (high proficiency).
    • Strong problem solving, judgment, and decision‑making skills (high proficiency).
    • Stress tolerance (medium proficiency).
    • Requires frequent use of computers and office equipment (medium proficiency).
    Required Licenses & Certifications
    • Registered Nurse, New York State License.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association, upon hire.
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association, upon hire.
    • Certification in area of specialty or CNML (Certified Nurse Manager and Leader) required within three (3) years of hire/transfer into the Assistant Nurse Manager role.
    • Certification required if supervised employees are required to have it.
