Job Summary

In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager:

  • Assures the delivery of quality department/clinical services in accordance with established hospital and regulatory/accreditation agency standards.
  • Promotes a positive and professional image, serving as a role model, coach, mentor, problem solver and resource for staff and peers.
  • Is responsible and accountable for the overall operations of their assigned department, including development of department goals and objectives aligned with the hospital mission and strategic plan, personnel management, and budget monitoring.
  • Manages the FTE component of staffing budgets.
  • Maintains 24‑hour responsibility for nursing care on the unit.
  • Collaborates with physicians and the Health Care Team to assure optimal age‑appropriate patient care.
  • Provides hospital supervision as required by the Division of Nursing.
  • Participates in the development of evidence‑based standards of care for their clinical area.
  • Assures employee compliance with hospital and Human Resources policies and procedures.
  • Ensures employee competency and education requirements are met per hospital policy.
  • Participates in the Performance Improvement Program as defined by the organization.
  • Ensures a safe environment for employees and patients.
  • Maintains knowledge of department operations.
  • Works collaboratively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team, promoting a team concept within the department and across the hospital.
  • Demonstrates positive customer service, fosters employee relations, and ensures staff adhere to the Customer Service Behavioral Standards.
  • Supports hospital initiatives and projects, acting as a positive change agent.
  • Participates in community service.
Essential Functions
  • Adheres to WPH performance standards, policies, and behaviors.
  • Develops and submits departmental goals and objectives aligned with nursing and hospital strategic plans.
  • Conducts interviews, hires, evaluates, counsels, and terminates employees per hospital policy.
  • Schedules staff based on the budgeted staffing plan and department needs.
  • Updates the FTE component of staffing budgets continuously.
  • Develops and submits operating and capital budgets, reporting variances to the Division Administrator.
  • Ensures compliance with governmental, state, and accreditation standards.
  • Completes staff orientation and ongoing competency and education requirements.
  • Provides house supervision as required by the Division of Nursing.
  • Attends educational programs or activities to maintain current knowledge and expertise.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed.
  • Participates in department involvement in ongoing performance improvement initiatives.
  • Develops evidence‑based standards of care, policies, and procedures for the area of responsibility.
  • Ensures service excellence initiatives and achieves organizational goals for patient satisfaction.
  • Attends all required meetings.
  • Conducts monthly staff meetings, updates staff, addresses issues, and records minutes.
  • Uses multiple methodologies to communicate information.
  • Adheres to safety standards for employees and patients.
  • Participates in committees, task forces, projects, as required.
  • Submits all required work reports to the Division Administrator.
  • Integrates patient rights and nursing ethics into work practice.
  • Adheres to the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Delegates activities to staff in accordance with the NYS Nurse Practice Act.
  • Adheres to the ANA Code of Nursing Ethics.
  • Adheres to all WPH standards of care, policies, procedures, dress code, conduct, and mandatory education.
  • Creates and maintains a culture of shared governance.
  • Works with the Magnet Program Director to align initiatives with strategic goals and Magnet critical components.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    • BSN required.
    • 1–3 years of experience, with at least 2 years in relevant acute care.
    • Basic knowledge of management skills (low proficiency).
    • Previous management/leadership experience preferred.
    • Ability to function as a staff RN.
    • Demonstrates excellence in clinical skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
