Registered Nurse; RN - OR General Surgery

Location

St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, part of Hartford Health Care, a 473-bed community teaching hospital, 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility, and large multispecialty provider group.

Provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization, promoting safe care for patients undergoing operative and other invasive procedures as the RN Circulator and supporting the surgical team for maintaining sterility.

• Demonstrates knowledge and skills to assess patients and identify physical, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and age‑related needs to provide individualized care.
• Reviews charts for completeness per documentation protocols prior to and after surgical procedure.
• Adheres to all relevant health and safety standards.
• Communicates with patients, teammates, and physicians to ensure continuity of care.
• Assesses patients prior to surgery (e.g., NPO status) and alleviates their concerns.
• Prepares the operating room for surgery (supplies, implants, instruments, equipment).
• Checks equipment and troubleshoots as needed.
• Assumes responsibility for keeping the operating room sterilized.
• Positions and prepares patient on operating table.
• Monitors patient’s vital signs to detect anomalies.
• Passes medical instruments or other objects to the surgeon during operation when scrubbed.
• Adheres to safety standards and precautions.
• Maintains sterile technique and documentation throughout the procedure.

• Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Connecticut Department of Public Health obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
• Associate degree required; BSN preferred.
• Certified BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 60 days of hire date or job transfer date.
• Current 2 years’ experience as Operating Room Nurse (scrub is a plus, not required).
• Excellent knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
• Solid understanding of patient safety and precautions.
• In‑depth knowledge of surgical operation procedures.
• Critical thinker and problem solver.
• Team player.
• Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.
• Excellent communication skills.
