Job Summary

Responsible for providing primary care services, including assessing, diagnosing, prescribing, treating, and educating patients. The NP works closely with physicians and other clinicians in a team approach to patient care, and may specialize in a specific type of clinical care, such as pediatrics or geriatrics. The NP maintains professional practice standards and demonstrates leadership skills, participates in performance improvement and research activities, and collaborates with the healthcare team to provide comprehensive care.

Functions
  • Understand and adhere to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors
  • Perform health assessments including patient history and physical examination
  • Perform diagnostic procedures, according to privileges
  • Perform preventive screening according to age and history
  • Order diagnostic tests, evaluate results and incorporate them into the plan of care
  • Formulate appropriate diagnoses, based on history, physical examination and clinical findings
  • Plan and provide care, within the framework of policies, procedures, privileges and available resources, and applying relevant research
  • Involve the patient/family in planning care
  • Collaborate with physicians and other health care providers to coordinate care of patients and evaluate the plan of care and patient toward health goals, and modify the plan accordingly
  • Prescribe pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic therapies, according to privileges
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic procedures and tests within the scope of privileging
  • Provide patient/family education related to health status
  • Evaluate effectiveness of plan of care and interventions by comparing patients/significant others/family responses to planned outcome
  • Collaborate and communicate appropriately with all members of the health care team
  • Document in a thorough and timely manner
  • Participate in the education of health care professionals and students through mentoring, precepting, in‑services, seminars, and formal presentations
  • Participate in professional activities that contribute to the advancement of nursing practice, such as participation in professional associations and publication
  • Develop own clinical knowledge and skills through continuing education programs, coursework and reading professional literature
  • Participate in own performance evaluation and establishment of plan for self‑development and learning
  • Abide by the standards of care and standards of practice established by White Plains Hospital Center (WPHC)
  • Accept and abide by the “Ethical Code for Nurse” as established by the American Nurses Association
  • Practice within the regulations of the New York State Nurse Practice Act
  • Maintain nurse practitioner specialty certification with the American Nurses Credentialing Center or another national credentialing body, and with the New York State Department of Education (NYSED – Board of Nursing)
  • Incorporate guidelines and standards into practice as established by state and national regulatory bodies and professional organizations
  • Demonstrate effective stress management and problem solving skills
  • Role model professional behavior in all situations
  • Effectively use time to initiate special projects related to area of practice
  • Demonstrate integration of Quality Improvement and research into practice
  • Participate in systematic reviews of records and/or treatment plans for the purposes of peer review, self‑evaluation, outcome monitoring and/or quality improvement
  • Support research by defining research questions, participating and/or conducting research in practice setting, as indicated
  • Maintain a current collaborative practice agreement
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned
  • Qualifications
    • MSN required
    • 1–3 years of experience; minimum two years in an acute care setting preferred
    • Registered Nurse in New York;
      New York State Board of Nursing license required upon hire
