General Hours

12‑hour shifts, 2 or 3 days per week depending on status

Essential Functions
  • Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Monitors medical condition of patients and reports changes to appropriate personnel.
  • Assists physician with examinations, procedures, and other processes related to emergency medical and trauma patient care.
  • Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning equipment.
  • Inspects area daily for compliance with policies, procedures, regulations, and standards and takes corrective action when violations occur.
  • Ensures accurate maintenance of patient’s medical record and that patient records are treated as confidential information; adheres to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in performance standards and skills required of a team leader.
  • Competently cares for patients of all ages (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric); able to assess data and interpret age‑specific needs.
  • Develops comprehensive nursing care plans for patients and/or families according to the nursing process.
  • Organizes planning using a systematic and logical framework and flexible priorities to accommodate emergency situations.
  • Plans health teaching based on identified learning needs and readiness of patient/family.
  • Utilizes knowledge of nursing biological and social services in developing a plan of care.
  • Implements appropriate teaching plans.
  • Qualifies for position through an Iowa Criminal History/Dependent Adult Abuse check within applicable laws.
  • Uses safe patient‑handling devices/equipment correctly; all employees involved in lifting/transferring patients who need assistance must comply.

  • Serves on hospital committees to assist in development or implementation of CQI/UA studies.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in‑service meetings, and workshops.
  • Attends meetings as required.

Working Conditions:

May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases; regularly exposed to blood borne diseases; contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances; exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illnesses); subject to varying and unpredictable situations; handles emergency or crisis situations; performs emergency care; occasionally subjected to irregular hours; occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries; requires judgment/actions that could result in death of patient.

Qualifications

Graduate of a state‑accredited school of nursing; current Iowa license; ACLS and PALS certified or completion within five (5) years of hire.
