Primary Care Allied Health Professional

In Primary Care at the Spirit Lake VA Clinic, you will be part of a dynamic Patient Aligned Care Team where your technical proficiency and compassionate support directly enhance Veteran health outcomes. This role offers the opportunity to perform structured assessments, administer medications, assist with procedures, support preventive care, guide clinic operations, and engage in teamwork that strengthens continuity and quality of care.

Major Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides technically proficient, patient-centered care by conducting structured or focused health screenings, confirming reasons for visit, performing preventive procedures, and reinforcing instructions.
  • Performs pre-visit planning through chart review, gathering missing documentation, updating condition changes, and preparing clinical data for efficient appointments.
  • Manages clinic flow by rooming patients, collecting vital data, completing clinical reminders, assisting with procedures, and maintaining stocked exam rooms.
  • Uses judgment to select appropriate procedure sequence, review medications and allergies, identify urgent needs, initiate approved nursing protocols, and communicate findings to the Registered Nurse (RN) or provider.
  • Supports team by participating in daily huddles, pre-planning, immunizations, injections, prevention activities, secure message management, consult tracking, and follow-up with no-show patients.
  • Observes, identifies, and responds to patient needs, administering prescribed medications and documenting and reporting changes in condition.
  • Recognizes urgent or emergent situations, seeks assistance from the RN or provider, and initiates appropriate emergency interventions as directed.
  • Performs support duties for complex diagnostic tests and specialized procedures, including preparation, assistance, instrument handling, and patient monitoring.
  • Serves as a preceptor for less experienced Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses or support staff, providing orientation, education, and training.
  • Maintains a respectful, and safe care environment by incorporating customer service standards, protecting patient privacy, and adhering to computer security requirements.

Work Schedule:

Full-Time, Monday-Friday; 8 a.m.

- 4:30 p.m.

Pay:
Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave:
After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy:
After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66

Retirement:
Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance:
Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Physical requirements:

This position requires some degree of fitness, strength, and agility. Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, pulling, lifting arm overhead, and similar activities. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination.
