Alburnett Veterinary Service is a well-established full-service animal hospital in Alburnett, Iowa, providing comprehensive medical, surgical, and dental care. AVS was established in the early 1980s, and our current facility was constructed in 1989.

Our facility includes a well-stocked pharmacy, an in-hospital surgery suite, an in-house X-ray, updated dental unit with digital dental radiographs, heated surgical table, ultrasound, blood chemistry capabilities, and a closely supervised hospitalization area. We pride ourselves on maintaining a clean and quiet atmosphere for our clients and their four-legged friends.

As our industry demands more, AVS is ready to meet it. We are excited to offer walk-in/same-day appointments for both wellness and urgent care needs.

The Veterinary Assistant assists the veterinarians and technicians with patient care and treatment, monitors hospitalized pets, maintains inventory, prepares prescriptions, performs routine in-house laboratory work, educates clients regarding veterinary care and procedures, and assists with surgical procedures.

We are looking for a dependable, team oriented individual who is comfortable working in a fast paced veterinary practice and is willing to learn. Strong communication skills, a positive attitude, and a genuine passion for patient and client care are important to us. Veterinary experience is preferred but we are open to the right candidate who is eager to learn and contribute to the team.

Reliability, professionalism, and the ability to work well as part of a team are must-haves.

Our schedule may include weekdays with occasional Saturday coverage, depending on the position and practice needs.

  Clear tracking of lab specimens, medications, patient instructions, workflow, and other job-related items while managing multiple patients and clients.
• Client Satisfaction: Ensuring all activities and interactions result in the highest level of client satisfaction.

• Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery and other tasks as needed.
• Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights, as well as providing client education.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs of the patient during surgery.
• Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in-hospital laboratory testing and prepare specimens for outside laboratories.
• Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following proper safety procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
• Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments at the discretion of the veterinarian.
