Summary

Responsibilities

Perform duties of a consumer safety inspector, including:

  • Inspecting meat, poultry, and egg products to ensure compliance with federal regulations and safety standards.
  • Collecting samples and performing field tests and examinations.
  • Developing written reports and communicating findings orally to internal and external contacts.
  • Meeting basic SSOP and HACCP principles, verifying plant HACCP and SSOP responsibilities.
  • Performing basic mathematics and elementary statistical concepts for testing and sampling procedures.
  • Recommending refusal of exports and providing temporary coverage at locations outside the official duty station when required.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • At least 52 weeks of specialized experience related to regulated food commodities or other ingestible items, including experience as a consumer safety inspector, inspection aide, food inspector, public health inspector, or similar role.
  • Experience demonstrating application of proper sampling techniques, field testing, and corrective actions.
  • Ability to develop written reports and orally communicate findings.
  • For GS‑05 level: 52 weeks of qualifying experience with regulated food commodities and substances.
  • For GS‑07 level: at least one year of specialized experience and independent performance of routine duties.
  • For GS‑08 level: at least one year of experience with Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, SSOP, HACCP, and basic statistics.
  • For GS‑09 level: at least one year of experience at a more independent level, including export refusal recommendations and coverage at outside sites.
  • Volunteer experience through programs such as Peace Corps and Ameri Corps will be considered.
